I think you are underestimating pedophiles!

YES they would go through the indoctrination. This is an organisation who do the following

    1. Allow children to be alone with adults who are not their parents - quite often in ministry situations and at parties

    2. Teach children that the adults are their "uncles" and "aunties" and to trust JWs only

    3. HIDE the evidence when abuse is accused! JWs is a religion where a pedo is more likely to get away with it even if the child does talk!

It happens outside the JWs but I don't doubt that pedos would join if they knew about this stuff.

They are attracted to any way that allows them access to their sick addiction.

    1. Well as a parent who use to be a witness, I never participated or saw this practice. We were always encourged to work as a family in the ministry.

    2. Never heard of this teaching, maybe its an English thing. As far as only trusting JW's that is true.

    3. Ummmm, my point again is that most if not all religions have hidden this fact. Doesn't make it right, but any reasonable person will see that it is true. Just look up child abuse and religion and you will see most victims will say the leaders covered it up.

In the UK I've seen kids working with people on the ministry who are not their parents. That happens a fair bit....especially when the kid reaches around 10 years old.

In the cong I was in, the kids were encouraged to call their JW elders "uncle" or "aunty" - probably an extension of the brother sister thing.

As for coverups.....JWs still hold to the two witness rule. JWs have secret judicial committees. So they are NOT like most other religions at all in this regard. They still actually teach that it is inadvisable to bring reproach upon Jehovahs name by involving secular authorities (police) and they still teach that there has to be two witnesses to the incident for the victim to be believed.

The two witness rule isn't there "official" stance, but I understand there is a difference in what they say publically and whats taught. As far as committees I don't think other religions hold public forums when it comes to light they have a pedophile issue.

I was brought up in a cong where I called everyone aunty and uncle and could not have asked for a nicer up bringing.

Sirona, I see your point but I get the feeling that your snow blind, look at the numbersin my original post, if 20 Million girls in the US alone, and Im sure those figures are probably typical for the western world, are abused, and if pedophiles were attracted, we would have larger growth, we dont. Our abuse rates are the same as every were else Im sure.

For all those people that are really passionate, put your energies into support for victims and lobby against easily accessible porn. Thats where the fault lise to some degree.

And really, Im sure if a man worth his pair heard of abuse in the org, the 2 witness rule would go out the window and most dads I know in the org love their kids as much as anyone and would die if anything happened.

    Don't you get it?

Just because you were OK, that does'nt mean that it's OK. The closed community of a cong is fertile breeding ground for child abuse of more than one kind.

Sexual abuse is one of many ways to be abused. Mental abuse is also rife!

If you don't agree that's your opinion but there are many many hundreds who disagree with you and from my own knowledge and experience the question at the beginning of this thread is a valid and real one.

The whole Auntie/Uncle thing is a way of making you trust people who your gut instinct tells you stay away from. If you were not a witness these people would not be in your circle of associates as your instinct tells you to stay away. But we as little ones, minors etc are told by our seniors to call these people Aunty/Uncle. An artifical relationship is then created and we trust against our better judgement.

Then it all can go wrong.

    Trip.

In response to the comments that pedophilia is not specifically a JW problem and therefore "bashing" is not appropriate: Yes it is true, JW's are not unique in having this problem in their organization. But that is exactly the POINT. JW's teach themselves and their children that their organization is a special place of safety. Outside the org is "the world" where danger and terror abound. Inside the org is the pure spiritual paradise where all are safe. That is a major teaching. "We are clean and have Jehovah's protection, the world is evil and dangerous." This self-righteous pompous lie/exaggeration amounts to a false claim made in the name of God. It invites a strong response from those who have been hurt.

NonD - Excellent point. A big part of the vulnerability of JW children is the feeling of security they have within the org. Which makes it all the more tragic that the org is not working harder to protect them.

A recent AP investigation says it's not exaggerating to say there is probably at least one sexual predator working in every school in the US. People will go through college and get a teaching degree in order to have access to children in their jobs. Some people are just very sick.
