Sorry, I ht the enter button too soon.

Your Opinion: Should he have resigned or should he had fought the charges and stayed in office?

He should have resigned. He's a hypocrit who had no friends to back him up because he burned every bridge he had.

He's a fighter and I was very surprised he resigned as quickly as he did. He lost all credibility and he would not have been able to govern effectively had he stayed. I think he did the right thing by resigning.

Even if nothing else comes out, which I believe we are only at the beginning of this scandal, he needed to resign.

He lost credibility and can no longer provide the leadership necessary for the job.

It's funny though, he's only lost credibility because he had it to lose in the first place. He was uniquely competent and good at his jobs as Attorney General and Governor.

Compare that to the much more sleazy sex and corruption scandals to have hit several other politicians who choose (and have been allowed) to stay in their positions.

Is he a hypocrite? The knee jerk response would be to say that he is, and he is, to an extent, but not for the knee jerk reasons, and certainly not for the reasons that sleazebag wallstreeters are cheering his downfall.

He is only a hypocrite to the extent that he did not use his political and legal power in the past to try and either legalize or limit prosecution of prostitution. That's it.

That he did something illegal and unseemly and harmful to his family does not change the fact that the white collar criminals he is famous for going after are far more a disease upon this country than any poor person looting a grocery or clothing store after a natural disaster, or any person choosing to work in the sex industry. Direct your outrage at those robber barrons, or keep your collective heads in a very dark smelly place, America.

Power corrupts. Men and women in power do corrupt things because they CAN.

Spitzer lost his authority when he was found to be doing corrupt things (money laundering and hiring a call girl). Like a dark cloud, that would have followed him around for the rest of his term.

There's no way he could have continued to serve effectively as governor. His time became past, once the wiretaps revealed what he was doing.

Given that he is responsible to fight crime then if he is involved in crime he has a conflict of interest and must rightfully recuse himself.

Really though, consensual adult activities do not need to be administered or prohibited by civil authorities.

Only because of his hypocrisy, not because of involvement in prostitution per se.

I haven't kept up on the story, so the money laundering aspect that Gopher speaks of is news to me. That casts a darker shadow for me.

Void, he was just trying to hide the $$ that was going to the Escort Service. That's all.
