That would mean that there is more than one involved, and not one and only?

The Greek text doesn't use the article before hilasmos (neither here nor in 4:10; same for the cognate adjective hilastèrion in Romans 3:25); as the word is in predicate function in both cases (of the subject in 2:2, of the object in 4:10) Greek syntax would not require the article for a definite sense either. Imo both translations are possible; neither of them can be formally ruled out.
There are more translations that use a, instead of the. It depends on the position a translator takes to emphasize we do not need another reconciliatory arrangement. “the propitiation”; abstract, as in 1Co_1:30 : He is to us all that is needed for propitiation “in behalf of our sins”; the propitiatory sacrifice, provided by the Father’s love, removing the estrangement, and appeasing the righteous wrath, on God’s part, against the sinner. Jamieson, fausset and brown commentary as shown above makes that clear.

Look at human behaviour, biological and emotional needs and expectations they each have as needs and experiences. Provide them with a reality where choice is an available reality and attempt to help each human make those choices!

Doesn't matter if he was "a" propitiation or "the" propitiation. It's all fiction, folks. Made up. Escapist fantasy.
