Yes, it is alive and well. I was abused from the first week. Went to the elders and they sent a MS over to ask him if he beat me. He said no, the MS left, and..... It doesn't take much imagination to guess what happened next. I went through 12 years of being told that I shouldn't make him mad, I didn't respect him enough not to complain, to be a good submissive wife and then he wouldn't get mad at me. They watched me go from a respectable slender weight to under 80 pounds - I looked like one of the Ethiopian stick people. The DO, Don Amy, came and sat on my couch and did the same thing as the MS and then had the face to wonder why I didn't show at the next meeting (too bruised and couldn't climb the stairs). My reward for finally leaving? DF'd and slandered. And they still stand behind him, even after professional assessments have revealed what he really is. I was not the only sister in the KH who was beaten either. His older son is a mess. I still struggle with PTSD.

About 20 years ago, during a very brief foray back into the BORG, I went to my best childhood friend's wedding. She had met this young man probably only 6 mos before the wedding, he was new to the area and had a lot of family in Minnesota/Great Lakes area. He kind of gave me the creeps, and I wasn't too sure about him, but she was thrilled. When we were kids we had often planned our weddings, and I really think she just wanted to get married and out of her horribly abusive childhood home. Her non-JW dad was not even discreet in his ugliness towards the family. The JW mom worked her butt off and put up with it (and still does to this day).

Well, other than a coincidental plane ride we shared until chicago for her honeymoon, I didn't see her for nearly 4 years.

She had two little boys, and was pregnant. She was always small, but she was skeletal. She told me a lot in the short visit we had. Her husband was mentally ill and had been on meds when she met him. His whole family knew he was severely schizophrenic along with some other fun things, but no one told her until they went to visit a few days after the wedding. He had been sent to WA to find a wife-because he was well known where he lived, and would never be able to marry. As soon as they married, abuse started, he went off his meds, she became pregnant (repeatedly). She was living in a trailer with her kids and husband and getting public assistance. She 'couldn't' leave him, she was in it through sickness and health.

She was my best friend, and she was speaking to me when she knew she wasn't supposed to be. She was very frank, and I don't think she had it in her to lie anymore about it. You could see the hope was just not there anymore. Her eyes were just dead. If you had seen her before-she was lovely, very animated, very lively. Even in her father's house she had youth and possibilities on her side.

Her wonderful JW in laws deserve a special hole in hell for what they caused and allowed and encouraged to happen. They KNEW what her life would be and they didn't give a crap.

Its alive and well in my congregation. Me, as long as I play the stepford wife, things are just peachy. I did try to talk to the elders once - complete waste of time and i will never talk to them again.

Welcome Helen, Get some help for yourself. I'd would live at a woman's shelter before I'd let some man treat me like shit.

You got to take care of you. Hope you stick around.

I have seen verbal abuse aplenty. The witless that brought me into the cancer had a wife that he was verbally putting down a lot, abusing his headship, and making her do more field circus than she could comfortably do (he attempted to make me pioneer, too--until I explained that (1) it had to be voluntary, (2) once I was hounded, it could never again be voluntary, and (3) I am not going to waste my time pioneering if it is not going to count).

Yes, the elders told me to be a better wife, and to be more submissive when he beat on my kids and me. Do to circumstances out of my control, the police were notified of what was going on in our home.

The police arrested him, and the judge gave him a 30-day sentence and a year probation for what he did to my kids and myself.

Today, I (fortunately) am df'd...and he's a brother in good standing at the kh.

    Stupid!

I have told my story many times, and it seems my story is the same as every other battered wife. What really gets me is that the elders never punished my abusive jw husband, however, they were very quick to df me when I said I couldn't take it anymore. Through most of it, I was a regular pioneer, and he couldn't hold onto the simplest of priveledges. It seemed to me that he couldn't make any headway in the organization, because he would buy pornography and perform oral sex on himself and then run to the elders to confess. But beating and threatening his wife didn't seem to be a real problem for them. I was simply told to be a better wife and wait on Jehovah. Had I stayed, we would've marked our 26th anniversary this year. I can't imagine suffering that long. Doesn't it strike you as odd that female pioneers aren't held in as high esteem as "going nowhere" males? It even seems to defy the common sense of the WTB&TS.

This bull shit came from the very TOP down.

It is a male dominated organization just look at Knorr and the rest of the "good old boys."

I seem to remember WT articles telling wifes to stay with unbeleiving husbands who were abusive "So by their actions the scum bags might come into the borg too"....what logic!

Be a punching bag for the lord!

I know of two "sisters" who obviously aren't "praying hard enough" or disappointing thier owners in some way. The "brothers" who are beating them get the occasional talking to, but no punishment.
