Thanks for the Sagan quote, Daneil-P. I think high-control sects and cult-like religions push the envelope beyond "resistant to rational inquiry" to totally blind to rational inquiry. These religions do all they can to remove the eyes of believers. The blind following the blind becomes a fulfilled prophecy with groups like Jehovah's Witnesses.
They are living in the Dark Ages, and want to plunge everyone else into the Second Dark Ages. After the failure of 1914, they are still using a close date as a tool to threaten initiatory force to get people into their Dark Ages. And they are not going to give up until they have successfully got the whole world into it.

I went home and asked myself "If we keep saying the world is about to end, doesn't it actually have to end some time?" I couldn't come up with any internally logical response to my own question.
The world has yet to end.
It's really close now though.
Just consider these warnings, that were written not more than around 20, 30 years ago:
(Zeph 1:14) "The great day of the Lord is near, near and hastening fast."

(1. Cor 7:29) "What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short."
1. Cor 10:11 "Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come."
