God Damn America - in context

Terry , Burn : I beg to differ. Without going into detail, in general we must have a larger context within which we live, where "God damn America" can be spoken and grappled with. To be otherwise is to live in, say, a high-control religion that tolerates no disagreement.

America is strong enough to face criticism. Indeed, a measure of it's strength will be its ability to face itself in this way.

And America must exist in a larger context, have a higher ideal and a future goal beyond what it is today. There is room for growth.

Well, sure. And we are grappling with Wright right here on this thread. And Terry grappled with it best IMHO. It is racist BS that hurts blacks and whites. It keeps blacks in a narrow context, and reinforces feelings in whites that they are still hated about the past. To not allow people to say otherwise is to live in, say, a high-control religion that allows no disagreement. This Wright character cashes in on getting people angry and playing on their feelings of victimhood. He couples this with religion, a powerful tool. He tells them to stay in their majority black communities, even if they are inner city ghettos, in the name of solidarity, then he takes his cash and moves into whitey's part of town. Hipocrite.

Criticism is fine. Criticism is necessary. Criticism is helpful and suggestive. Criticism starts discussion.

Condemnation, on the other hand, leaves no room for negotiation or detente because it is ultimate Judgement!

Think about what is wonderful in America for a moment. Reverend Wright doesn't go to prison or face a firing squad or beheading for reviling the most important leaders in our Government! In Muslim countries, you can lose your life whispering such things or even drawing cartoons!

The only context in which Truth can exist begins with an honest debate. Honest debate cannot find its beginning in words that start: "God Damn ____".

Within the last hundred years, we went from a nation where women couldn't vote or have credit, where blacks had to pay a poll tax to vote and were segregated to a country where a women or a black person can be President! This is definite progress no matter how you slice it.

When I was going to Junior High School I was seen playing in my (black) neighborhood with a young black boy. I was called "N**ger Lover" by the kid who saw me at school. (Jay Rich, you bastard!!)

Today, you are more likely to be condemned by your peers for uttering the "N" word than ever before. White people are on the downlow when it comes to any word critical of a black person. Cries of "racist" are easily attached to white people whith even the most considered utterance of disapproval. This could never have happened even fifty years ago!

Progress such as this is everywhere evident. Opportunity is the foundation of achievement in America for any person of any color, background or religion.

Why is it--I must ask you--that Viet Namese, Japanese, Chinese, Serbian, etc. immigrants come to America, learn English and end up becoming citizens, starting their own family business and achieving the American Dream while Black people continue to lick their wounds, utter contempt for education "You tryin' to be white?" and ask for handouts in the form of reparation, entitlements and such?

I put the blame squarely on Black Leaders who sell them out by making them all victims who must gnash their collective teeth at wounds only suffered hundreds of years ago as though no progress has been made.

Jews are uniformly hated by the Black community when it was Jewish leaders who marched along side black people during the Civil Rights Era demonstrations and Jewish attorneys who donated their time and money for free to secure equal rights for persons of color.

Why? Because the feckless Black leaders fill them with hateful, spiteful and damnable rhetoric blaming Jews for every conceivable ill in society just as Hitler did in the 30's!

If any chickens have come home to roost it is the despicable, feckless liars who claim to have the black community's interests at heart, but, who only line their own pockets at their expense by filling them with inexcusable hatred and blame for the white man.

How can you defend a guy who claims AIDS was designed as a weapon against black people... are you freaking kidding me? Shouldn't you be more concerned about the secret underground alien bases right now??

BizzyBee - Even though you say that slavery, discrimination, and segregation are "very old news," the truth of the matter is that today - in the year 2008 - slavery continues to be a world-wide scourge,

    Rapunzel,

I thought it was understood that, given the thread title, the context is 'God damn America.' I have commented elsewhere

    http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/29/155100/2841762/post.ashx#2841762

on the fact that there are more slaves worldwide today than at any time in history. But not in America.

And, as for segregation and discrimination, both nefarious forces are alive and well in the United States.

Prejudice and discrimination do indeed exist. However, discrimination on the the basis of race, in housing, employment, etc., is illegal. Sometimes people get away with murder, too, but it is still illegal and punishable if proven.

One of the founding fathers - Thomas Jefferson - was a slave-owner.

Many, if not most, of the Founding Fathers were slave owners. However, as the Age of Enlightenment spread in France, England and America, the FF along with the rest of Western Civilization began to put into practice their ideals: "all men are created equal." Slavery became an abomination to rational men, and most of the FF voluntarily freed their own slaves before the Civil War.

A sample from Fadeout's previous posts:

I watched two of the videos... it's been two years since I last bought anything the WTBTS was selling, and it's amazing the repulsion I feel watching these. Like a physical reaction, heart rate goes up and everything. Feels like falling back into the pit you finally managed to climb out of.
Don't think I can watch the other ones just yet. Bastards.

    Another:

    Bumper stickers:
LOSE BRAIN NOW! ASK ME HOW!
Time and unforeseen occurance happens. (next to steaming pile)
My other car is a 4-door service vehicle.
    Support our troof!
    Ray Franz for President.
I have nine hours this month... will you be number ten?
Bethelite on Board. (shape of Baby on Board window sticker)
Big Joe is watching you. (alongside pair of sinister eyes)
I would rather have SMALLPOX than a VACCINE. (picture of dripping syringe labeled "pus"
Friends don't let friends get dunked.
40-year old virgin... ask me why!
Your "No Soliciting" sign is powerless against me... I'm one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Are you not interested in religion in general, or is it just my creepiness?
Prohibition is from the Devil!! (picture of Joe)
Come to the Kingdom Hall and try our NEW light!
Babylon the Great has fallen... your move, Christendom.

    This one is appropriate:

Hey hambeak, to answer your first question I think everyone who has been through the Society has been messed up to some extent. If a would heals successfully, you get a scar... if it doesn't, you've still got an open wound.

What is the point here? If it isn't obvious, you need to see a mental health professional. I think Terry has some good suggestions.

T, you are stereotyping black people. SOME black people who have ignorant views have that type of outlook on life. Going to college, starting their own business and achieving the American Dream is normal for those with brown skin. I don't care what the media portrays, it is far from the majority.

I put the blame squarely on Black Leaders who sell them out by making them all victims who must gnash their collective teeth at wounds only suffered hundreds of years ago as though no progress has been made.

Most do not need a leader and prefer to lead their own life. That's a good stereotype, if one feels the need to do so.

Jews are uniformly hated by the Black community

Where?! Fill me in on this. Just the opposite is true, if a general statement must be made.

Why? Because the feckless Black leaders fill them with hateful, spiteful and damnable rhetoric blaming Jews for every conceivable ill in society just as Hitler did in the 30's!

What black leaders, Terry? Any black minister I've known (if you want to call a religious person a leader) prayed for Jews to believe in Jesus to be saved yadda yadda yadda.
    Do YOU know any?

FYI-ALL people preaching from any platform in any church/synagogue/mosque/KH, etc are the same in my book. LIARS.

If any chickens have come home to roost it is the despicable, feckless liars who claim to have the black community's interests at heart, but, who only line their own pockets at their expense by filling them with inexcusable hatred and blame for the white man.

Sometimes, in discussion like these, black people are generalized as though all like people like Al Sharpton and Rev. Wright. That is not the case. While you may see angry people on the television agreeing with reverands, everyone else is at work and in school, and telling people like those guys to shut the f**k up. In case any of you didn't know.

Terry, I respectfully submit that you paint all Black people with too broad a brush.

However, this observation - with the emendation that most Black people ... - is right on target:

Black people continue to lick their wounds, utter contempt for education "You tryin' to be white?" and ask for handouts in the form of reparation, entitlements and such

I've grappled with the problem highlighted in red all of my life.

We have a long way to go - but goddam we have come a long way. We have had African American Defense Secretary and Secretary of States and now we have an African American with a damn good chance of being President. We have an African American female who is one of the most popular people on TV.

Look to the Future and dont dwell in the past - we have come a long way.

  • BizzyBee
    BizzyBee
BizzyBee, did you listen to Obama's speech on race?

    Yes, I did.

Wright is from a time where segregation was still legally practiced in America. Obama is not.

Jeremiah Wright, at 66, is also from a more recent time that established the Civil Rights Act, Affirmative Action, the Voting Rights Act and school desegregation. A time that has seen African Americans take major cabinet posts, become mayors and governors, MLK win the Nobel Peace Prize and his birthday become a national holiday and now, the eve of possibly the first black president.

Apparently, black leaders who point out the opportunities afforded by these advances are not so popular.
