Take off your rose-tinted glasses BrentR. Charlie was no saint.

I don't believe he had altzeimers when bowling was made so stop making excuses for him. He was a great actor, I loved Ben Hur, but he showed little compassion for the 6 year old girl killed by a little boy because he found his uncle's handgun and took it to school one day.

If he was able to stand up and rally a crowd of NRA members with long speeches and pithy punchlines, then he was able to handle a one to one interview. If he couldn't because of ill health why didn't his people tell him to refuse to do it? I'll tell you why. Because he thought Michael Moore was sympathetic to the NRA cause and that the interview would be a good PR exercise.

When he realised MM wasn't as sympathetic as he thought, ole charlie left the building.

Now which other group never wants to hear negative info about themselves and runs away from hard questions??? Hmmm let me think...........

First of all: Let me apologize for the use of Memorandum instead of Memorial or other -

Second: Though a man is the sum of his parts, isn't it unfortunate that instead of honoring a man for his life, what he stood for, and the good he accomplished, some feel a desire to fillet his intentions at the gravesite?

I don't own handguns. I hate violence. I have never supported [nor hated] the NRA. I believe that people kill. I believe that that this document protects the right of American's to keep and bear arms. PERIOD:

    Bill of Rights

    Bill of Rights

    Bill of Rights

    from http://www.earlyamerica.com/earlyamerica/freedom/bill/bill3.html

Ten of twelve of these Articles became foundational to US law in 1791. I believe that the forth listed is still in effect. We know them as the Bill of Rights. Heston supported that right, in spite of those who believe it should be revoked. It is still in effect.

It tells alot about a person when they stoop to that level.

To be honest Jeff, that sounds just like something a witness would say when confronted with some of the rubbish Rutherford came up with.

Bearing arms may well be part of the bill of rights but just because you have the right to bear arms, doesn't make it a good idea. Just ask any one of the 1000's of americans who have lost loved ones every year due to firearms, either accidently or deliberately. When Heston stood on the platform and raised a rifle above his head and proclaimed in his best acting voice "FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS!!" Then I lost a great deal of respect for the man. Not as a man with an distinguished career in the acting profession, my respect for him still stands in that field. But I lost respect for him as a compassionate human being who didn't want to take into account the terrible human suffering that has been caused because guns are so readily available.

But he was only human, he made mistakes. In supporting the NRA I believe he made one of the biggest mistakes of his career.

By pointing out his mistakes does not negate the good he accomplished in his life but it gives a fuller picture of the man, warts and all.

And that does far more justice to his memory.

    Oh really??

Now you resort to Ad Hominem remarks to make your point.

Again, where have I seen THAT before........

I don't get the comparison. And don't appreciate being being referred to as 'sounding like a witness'. Most of the witnesses I knew agreed with you on the matter of gun control - afraid of what they knew little about, especially the politics involved in a very controversial subject.

As I stated very clearly in my last post: I hate violence. I detest that some innocents get killed every year due to gun violence. I do not support the NRA, as I previously stated also. I don't believe that political action groups are needed to assure that our constitution is upheld. But I DO SUPPORT THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS mentioned. And get irate with those who wish to arbitrarily remove our freedoms to solve attendant problems associated with such freedoms.

Far more children are killed every year due to abuse and misuse of automobiles, alcohol and drugs, than by bullets, in this country. But I would oppose any who suggested that we should outlaw the legal use of an automobile. I know you will likely retort that I have dragged an irrelevant argument in to muddy the waters - not true. But before you reply with more attacks on Mr Heston, the NRA or me or other posters here - please be reminded of rule #10 of the posting rules here.

The purpose of this thread is to HONOR Mr Heston. Posting off topic, otherwise known as hijacking the thread into areas it was never intended is against the rules:

    10. Posting an off-topic comment.

I always thought his acting was wooden and without nuance, which is fine for blockbusters, but not really what i think of as good acting. He was always Charlton Heston and didn't really inhabit his roles.

A legend on a par with Ronald Reagan? lol. Someone needs to watch more movies me thinks!

Ronald Reagen was not ever known as a great actor, and to be honest, Chuck Heston wasn't either. He was a big celebrity and a character, but never renowned for great acting ability. Please rent The Ten Commandments or The Greatest Show on Earth and watch. See if you don't get a chuckle out of the acting. Jimmy Stewert is in the cast of The Greatest Show on Earth. He acts circles around Charlton. It's like comparing Pamela Anderson to Glen Close.
