BrentR, true California has alot of environmental groups, but Ky does not. Coal companies in Kentucky are bulldozing mountains right and left, and no environmental group has stopped them yet. Build the refineries in Kentucky, expand our gasoline production and get our prices down.
OIL in N Dakota!!! Time to Keep it out of the private sector.

Sounds great to me!
It's a multipronged problem with so much at stake. I won't be holding my breath waiting for cooler heads to prevail on this one.

potentially enough to meet all U.S. oil needs for two decades
2 decades isn't very long. I think we need to be ready to use this oil, but until then, lets use everybody else's oil first.

What about all the environmental groups that would block the construction in court? If they would do it to a solar power company in California they most certainly would go after an oil refinery.
I think once we are closing in on 4.00. a gallon.....it won't be a problem. Environmentalists still have to get to work. If it is a problem, I am sure they will be out-shouted by the rest of the country. I recycle, grow my own herbs, use my car as little as possible.....a tank lasts 6 to 8 weeks, (sorry to say 8 cylinder), shut off all possible lights all day long, leave the temp in my home very high so the air doesn't run......etc.., etc., etc. They will eventually have to give in, even for their own good. r.

There is no excuse for $3+ gasoline, and we shouldn't have to ride around in Prius'. I demand cheap oil--dang it !!!
I hope gas rises to $10 per gallon.
What would really be great is if someone could make a car that runs off of something readily available such as tap water,
I'm developing one just for you, but I'm only installing this new technology in a Prius.

You actually want gas at $10 a gallon? I guess you were just being sarcastic.

America is sitting on top of a super massive 200 billion barrel Oil Field that could potentially make America Energy Independent and until now has largely gone unnoticed. Thanks to new technology the Bakken Formation in North Dakota could boost America’s Oil reserves by an incredible 10 times, giving western economies the trump card against OPEC’s short squeeze on oil supply and making Iranian and Venezuelan threats of disrupted supply irrelevant.
In the next 30 days the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) will release a new report giving an accurate resource assessment of the Bakken Oil Formation that covers North Dakota and portions of South Dakota and Montana. With new horizontal drilling technology it is believed that from 175 to 500 billion barrels of recoverable oil are held in this 200,000 square mile reserve that was initially discovered in 1951. The USGS did an initial study back in 1999 that estimated 400 billion recoverable barrels were present but with prices bottoming out at $10 a barrel back then the report was dismissed because of the higher cost of horizontal drilling techniques that would be needed, estimated at $20-$40 a barrel.
It was not until 2007, when EOG Resources of Texas started a frenzy when they drilled a single well in Parshal N.D. that is expected to yield 700,000 barrels of oil that real excitement and money started to flow in North Dakota. Marathon Oil is investing $1.5 billion and drilling 300 new wells in what is expected to be one of the greatest booms in Oil discovery since Oil was discovered in Saudi Arabia in 1938.
The US imported about 14 million barrels of Oil per day in 2007 , which means US consumers sent about $340 Billion Dollars over seas building palaces in Dubai and propping up unfriendly regimes around the World, if 200 billion barrels of oil at $90 a barrel are recovered in the high plains the added wealth to the US economy would be $18 Trillion Dollars which would go a long way in stabilizing the US trade deficit and could cut the cost of oil in half in the long run.

I hope gas rises to $10 per gallon.
If you really believe that then I hope you also believe in paying triple taxes for social programs as well to buffer all those who are losing their jobs or have their hours cut back already. I hope you believe in increasing the funding for food banks and for kids food programs. I hope you believe in free medical care for all those unemployed and their families who are and will suffer even more as this continues. I hope you believe in subsidies to seniors and low income families as home heating oil in some of the coldest locations, has risen so high that there has been concern over trying to keep the elderly warm this past winter.
We should be working toward independent fuel sources and investing in solar and wind power, but until we do, I hardly believe that rubbing your hands in glee over rising gas prices is helping. The country as a whole, state by single state, should be planning their infrastructures and transportation needs to take all this into consideration - oil in N Dakota is one way to make it happen there. sammieswife.

If Kentucky had it's way the Ohio river would be on fire daily. But that is a story for a different day. I dont think Kentucky has ever really cleaned up the messes made in the mines from the 30's and 40's yet. But if your state legislator is happy building a hog fence out of old pallets I guess you get what you get.
I work in the energy business... If you knew the dollars that go into permits and enviormental issues to build any plant you would see why oil refineries dont get built. Pipelines, well sites, all the hardware and realestate that goes with this kind of thing gets permited and argued over to the tune of $billions of dollars.
If the state can screw up development what make you think they could effectivly govern production? Plus, someone in ND owns the mineral rights to that oil... ya just cant take it. (well ya can but but those domain laws are rude)
