Well first off, he referred to himself as "a" jehovahs witness, not "one of" jehovah's witnesses. Could just be a goof.
Not necessarily. Quite a few JWs don't refer to themselves using the 'approved' terminology. Some will say they're "a Jehovah's Witness" or "a Jehovah Witness". I guess its the leadership's own fault for choosing a name for a collective noun that contains a possessive and a plural - no wonder some of them get confused.

I used to parrot the same 'clever' reasoning. Until someone pointed out that if a second hand car kept coming back on the market you'd be better talking to the former owners about its defects rather than the dealer! -
