You are not worthless! I am sorry you feel so inside.
There are many "fundies" who would tell you to just get down on your knees and pray to Jesus, telling him you recognize him as God's Son and that he died for your sins, and that you, as a sinner, wish to have him as Lord over your life.
To an ex-JW this is extremely uncomfortable.
First, you are told to pray TO JESUS. That was always a big no-no.
JWs pray to JEHOVAH -- in Jesus' name, or through Jesus.
Second, this concept that JESUS (not JEHOVAH) has the authority to hear your confession and to wipe away your sins.
Third, an ex-JW has never believed in the concept of grace (undeserved kindness) alone. There were always to be WORKS.
I'm guessing that you feel like you have to DO something to be worthy of Jesus wanting to be your friend.
It is not like that.
If you believe in Jesus and have acknowledged him as your Saviour in the past, then HE HAS BEEN YOUR FRIEND ALL ALONG. He has already accepted you.
Now it's time for YOU to be HIS friend.
In other words, he has been extending his friendship to you all along, you have merely to accept it.
You may have to ask him or even the Father to help you truly BELIEVE in the concept of grace -- sins freely forgiven thanks to the ransom, without anything more than recognition of that sacrifice.
Another way you can help yourself is to "spend time with" Jesus. Take time out of every day to read about him and meditate on what we know about what he taught.
When you feel more comfortable, you may wish to visit a church which has "open communion". That's when the church doesn't require you to be a member or to have undergone specific rites in order to share in the Lord's Evening Meal. You need only have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour.
It may be for you, as it was for me, a soul-touching moment when first you partake.
A flood of emotions -- finally feeling right about sharing in the 2,000 year old ritual; not thinking of it as something reserved for some others who are somehow 'better' than you; realizing how grateful you are for Jesus having endured the torture of crucifixion; maybe finally feeling it IS okay to pray to Jesus, that Jehovah won't mind you speaking to His unique Son whose name is above any other under the sun...
I hope this helps, Mark.
