Near-drowning is akin to attempted-suicide. In the sense that injury or near-death occurred. The person would have died without intervention, ie, getting CPR or getting your stomach pumped. IMHO

Nelly that's a PDF document. So, I guess it's trying to open Adobe Acrobat or your pdf reader.

Life is beautiful, precious, and sacred. When I was younger my brother and I walked in to my parents room only to see our mother half way out the window in our 11th floor apartment. She turned around and came back in when she saw us. The world stood still that moment. I almost lost the central most important person in my life that evening. After that moment there were times when she tried over dosing on medication. After she divorced my father and was dis-fellowshipped, she had many moments where she threatened my brother and I with killing herself. Now she looks back and apologizes for those unjustifiable moments of self hate. Life was stressful back then for her, losing all her fake friends from the witless, losing her marriage, losing a close relationship with her family, almost losing child custody of us. It was a struggle for us all. In those days I was a little boy, so I couldn't do much, now things are different.

I would say that A and B are warning signs. A leads to B....but C is attempted suicide. I think there is a big leap from B to C.

A true attempt leaves a deep scar. The recovery from that is in an entirely different category.

Steve, I understand your point, but I think that "mkr" was making a simple spelling error. After all, vowel sounds in English are weak when compared to the vowel sounds in other languages; it's easy to confuse vowel sounds when writing English.

The English word, homocide, is based on the Latin - homo [which means "man"], and cidere [which means "murder" or "slay"]. The word, homosexual, is based on the Greek prefix, homo, which means "[the] same."

Just to reiterate my previous point, I think that, for the most part, people who write homocide instead of homicide are usually making a simple spelling error. It's very easy to make spelling errors in English.

At one point in my Jdub life I did think of it a couple of times but I couldn't ever do it. Never even attempted.

    Aude Sapere:

If someone is depressed but not yet talking about suicide, be a solid support for that person. Create a safe environment for them to talk candidly with you without adding much drama. Help them seek medical care to treat the depression and assess if their is an underlying medical cause.. Invite them to your home for dinner no matter how humble it is. The simpler the better. If they cancel, bring them a doggie bag. If they don't answer the door, leave the package outside the door and leave a voicemail message. Follow-up. Keep in contact and help them find joy in simple pleasures. Don't just write them off. You may find that just a little human kindness can go a very long way - especially for a depressed person who may be quietly thinking of a plan.

I'm no expert, but that sounds beautiful. If the JWs weren't such a cult, you'd have made a great elder.

Interesting stat about white men over age 85 having the highest successful suicide rate.

Gregor, do you mind if this thread goes down the side road of legalized assisted suicide?

Hillary_Step made a comment the other day I really liked about end-of-life decisions.

    I'll be back.

Just realized I never answered the OP.

    Put me in Group A.

When I was struggling with JWism in my mid-twenties I definitely had a couple of "Group A" experiences. The last one was life-changing for me. At least mentally/spiritually. As long as I have a shred of hope for continued life without long-term excruciating pain, I can't see myself ever being there again.

Here's my $.02 on assisted suicide.

In the "good old days" (pre-1900) life expectancy was much lower and the Grim Reaper did his reaping fairly quickly compared to now. With the technology we have now to keep someone clinging to "life" that, in their mind, is not worth living, they ought to have the option to end it. IMO. So far, Oregon is the only US State that allows it.

Gonna go look for Hillary's comment now.

Group B for me, though not in the last 3 years since I got my bird. He loves me even when I don't.
