Hellas bars were weird.... remember the food 'tokens'? In 1993 I went to the Crystal Palace assembly, then 2 weeks later saw Depeche Mode play the same venue... guess which event I prefered??

Hellas Bars - now theres a blast from the past - we even had them at Circuit Assemblies when the Society had taken over the menu -Danish Pastries (frozen) NO Ice Cream from the '99' machine and frozen Dinners which were dreadful - Kershaws I think - seen them in the cheap Frozen Food shops at 99p even today - seem to recall a hot meal at CO with these was about £4 - so a big markup.
Maine Road was very uncomfortable - toilets were rank - Hillsborough was good with the terraces where u could set up a camp - and it always rained (nearly always)
We had Oldham FC once - even as we were sat there the roof girders above us were being painted! lots of ruined suits that year - also - in those days - the hot meals were not prepacked so were cooked in huge containers - they tried a Pork Casserole once - cooked the day before and it all went off - stank to high heaven. The lot went down the drain. Paul Presland in charge of that I think.
The Society had huge deliveries of Hellas Bars made to East of Pennines Assy Hall and they had the assemblies collect them from there.
Derek Carter (overseer at Manchester Assy Hall went over to collect them regularly - whatever happened to him - seem to recall the society "dumped" him for a more pliable character - sad as he was a hard worker and had moved from London to set up first UK Hall in Manchester - he was designated to manage the London Assy Hall but that fell thru so he was directed North - had a semi-detached house at rear of Hall which the Society forced to be sold some years later and moved Derek into a flat over the stage of the Hall (and another flat for the DO)
Memories - not all bad - unlike the Hellas Bar which the Kids all laughed about as the Devil logo was so unlike what u would think HO would approve of. Just been reminded that Hellas confectionery came from Greece.

    Don't! Just Don't!

We were sitting watching TV News when the football bit came on. I said to my husband, 'Does that still remind you of....you know?' and he just said, 'We must have been nuts!'

How did we all put up with that sitting on concrete steps in pouring rain, and sweltering heat with crying babies and ...... just makes me mad thinking about it

We used to go to Wolverhampton, Sheffied Wednesday, and once the horrible old Leicester Football ground where the parking was in the cattle market and the smell.....well, I won't even begin.

    As for the Hella's bars.......yuk!

The first assembly we missed was when the twins were born. I was already beginning to suffer from a heart defect (been put right since) and was struggling to look after four children and just day to day living. My parents had been to Nottingham assembly and stormed round when they came home and gave us a proper going over for not going to the assembly like 'other people with babies who want them to survive Armageddon'. Apparantly, my mum told me, 'there was a lovely sister with twin babies there and she was managing very well', implication being that I was a useless article. And you know, we just sat there and took that bull shit and let them make us feel guilty.

I HATED ASSEMBLIES MY WHOLE CHILDHOOD AND MY ONLY GOOD MEMORY WAS WHEN ME AND MY NOW HUSBAND COULD HAVE A QUICK SNOG WHEN WE WERE TEENAGERS WHEN NO ONE WAS LOOKING, OTHER THAN THAT, THE WHOLE ASSEMBLY THING WAS A BLEEDING NIGHTMARE! (Glad I've got that rant off my chest!!! )

    What about those toilet queues?!!!

    What about those imbecile attendants?!

And who where's high heels and flowery dresses to a football stadium?

I suspect however, that these big assemblies are going to be amongst one of the next few things to be abolished in the new 'slim line' version of the WTBTS!

My only vacations and chances to get out of town were assemblies. I didn't know any better and thought that assemblies were so much fun. I loved them. I never knew what a real vacation was like.

Yeh!! I remember Oldham with the paint!!! I wonder what the painters made of it all!!

Bolton used to be good, and Hillsboro' but Oldham was rank. I remember having two conventions there one was a quagmire with driving rain and wind. That was the one that Rod Ketter wore a large coat with a hot water bottle underneath earning him the nickname Hotrod. And the other week was roasting hot!! Typical British weather!!

Were you there when lightening hit the Kippax stand??

    I was!!

We used to go to Bolton, then we went to Maine Road and I remember that day that there was thunder and lightening and the speaker carried on talking as lightening struck.

    I hated the MEN aswell.
