It's probably different everywhere. My granddaughter started middle school this past year. she's 10..and was in the 5th grade.
When I went to school middle school started at 7th grade.

Not sure about elsewhere but it was introduced here in the territory in recent years for school years 7 - 9.

It's basically to bridge primary and secondary schools. Make the transition easier and keep more kids interested in their education so they'll end up graduating rather than dropping out.

Yes I thought it would be around grades 6 to 8.

When my kids went to middle school it was grades 6-8. When I went to school many many years ago they had Junior high school, grades 7-9.

Jr HS is grades 7-9.
Middle school is grades 7-8 but might include 6th grade, as well.

Ours are usually 6-8 here. But my youngest daughter is at the middle school too, she just finished 4th. They are remodeling the elementary school.
When I went it was 7-9.

Where I'm from, it is the 7th and 8th grades only. Where I live now, it is 6th, 7th and 8th grades.
I went to junior high, though (grades 7-9). -

With much room for argument, where I was, elementary school was grades 1-4. Middle school was grades 5 and 6. Junior high was grades 7 and 8. High school was grades 9-12. Anything past grade 12 was college.
