My father-in-law heard from someone who has connections with the higher-ups that the Society thinks gas will be $10 a gallon in January. I'm "bookmarking" that statement on my calendar. If January comes around and gas isn't $10 I'm going to remind him of "what the Society said". Of course this all goes hand in hand I think with the reasons given for the new book study arrangement.
$10 gas

I believe it could happen. Gas just hit 1.50 a litre in parts of Canada and there are just about 4 liters to the gallon so that's 6 bucks a gallon right there
I think if it gets much higher you'll see a government intervention cause people just can't afford it. All the big American airlines are grounding planes, it will start to impact tourism and truckers are already starting to talk about less trips or higher prices for everything. In Canada Parliment is already calling people to testify as to why oil is so high. I think you'll see government step in and force the price down somehow. They'll have to or face the wrath of voters with this being an election year in the US and Canada's minority government barely hanging on to power.

horrible life
A know it all girl at work, told me that gas was going to $10.00. But she also had a 10 foot python, rode her own race horses, has her pilots license, owns 4 homes in different cities, had lasix surgery 3 years ago, and told me that I didn't have it 5+years ago, because it wasn't around yet, her ex-husband is sueing for alimony, tells me that everybody in the clinic is asking if I have a disease, (because I am blonde and pale), she is a vegetarian, who makes comments about whatever we bring for lunch, such as wormy meat, and do you know how that was raised?, and knows more about nutrition than God.
So you can take the $10.00 statement to the bank.

I don't think they are concerned with the wrath of the voters , GW has given himself more power than what parliament gave king george in britain during the revolution. I think alex jones is right and we are looking at a completely totalitarian government and enslavement of the poor or even extermination . I have seen adds for some sort of hyrdrogen conversion kit that can increase mileage with very little mechanical work . Hopefully it's not a farce .

Well it doesn't take a false prophet or a psychic to know that gas is going to get higher, but $10 a gallon? That would be totally devastating to this country. I would have to quit my job as I couldn't afford to work then.

The entire American infrastructure is built on one thing, cheap automobile fuel.
For decades highways have been built, small towns have been seen as irrelevant, public transportation is underfunded and underused, and railways have been dismantled. Lobbies for the trucking, auto, and oil industries have reined supreme. No one ever expected cheap energy to go away.
Many people are not within walking distance of certain necessities. Huge distances stand between stores and residential housing.
Because our infrastructure cannot be changed fast enough to make up for all the years of terrible neglect America is now in a technological race for cheap fuel. We are looking for the next big thing. Rather than find ways to design our country in a way that tones down consumption we are instead betting on the idea that one day it can all be powered by cheap sources. It seems like one hell of a gamble. -

High gas (oil) prices are a result of world oil production being less than world demand thus it is a seller's market. The worlds oil fields have reached their peak in ability to produce oil. In fact oil production will decline as time passes. Demand is going up (India and China are on board now) and increased demand coupled with dwindling supplies will result in a steady increase in the price of everything. The governments cannot cause the supply of oil to go up but maybe they can do something about the demand (rationing perhaps?)
There is hope though (not short term though) for countries like Canada with their vast reserve of oil tar sands and the USA with it's 1.5 trillion barrel of oil contained in the Green River Oil Shale reservoir. You'll never see cheap gas again but energy independence from OPEC is obtainable. Mark my words you will hear more and more about obtaining oil from oil tar sands and oil shale in the fairly near future.

You got that right. I have been to the tar sand mines in northern Alberta and it is immense!!!! .Alberta has imposed high royalties on the sand though , so US companies are very desparate

I wonder what happens when that "valueless" science finds a technology to utilize free energy. They have plenty of options available now for free, or cheaper, energy that does not use oil. One solution I have heard is a mission to the moon for isotopes of helium that would cost the equivalent of $7 a barrel. There are also devices to capture solar, wind, or tidal energy. Other, more complex systems could be developed that would create abundant free (or cheap) energy and distribute it.
And, if that gets put on the market any time before gas hits $10 a gallon, then I would be seeing pump prices plummet. If no one wants the stuff anymore, the price is going to head toward zero.
Besides, election time is near. If we get a president that wants $20 oil back, he will push into law measures to produce it and drive the prices back down. At the same time, if people trade their SUVs and Hummers for bicycles and smaller cars, and fuel economy goes up, usage of gas will go down--driving prices down with it.
