I went to a party tonight at the museum across the street from my house. It was a fund-raiser. I'm so lame I have to tell you all about it! It was fun. There were hundreds of people, lots of reporters, lots of things to do, open bar. They took everyone's photo and gave us each a print of our photo as a souvenir which was nice. The barbecue was delicious and it was on a hillside in the desert with a great view of San Jacinto mountain and the whole valley. Lovely breeze, perfect temperature, great food and drink. Also I went with a friend and between the two of us we knew the dirt on half the people there.

Lots of fun gossiping, people watching. Nice cowboy music entertainment. Loads of jewelry, cowboy theme so most of the women were so loaded with turquoise I don't see how they could stand up. The party is a fund-raiser, so these were mostly rich people. I was surprised to see the ruined complexions on most of the rich women and then I realized these women are married to outdoorsmen. Construction businesses, golfers, fishermen, speedboats on the Colorado river, that sort of thing. I had my photo taken with a donkey named "Christmas." Cute. Lots of interesting looking men, but they were all married or gay. In fact, mostly gay. However, the gay guys are a lot of fun, and I knew several of the volunteers too, so had folks to talk with. I wasn't invited because I'm rich (far far from it) but because they had to block the street in front of my house and they gave me two tickets. My friends who went with me is a volunteer at the museum, so I learned a lot about the museum too which was interesting. Some very elegant outfits, but the ensemble that got the most attention was a pair of very very yellow corduroy short shorts and turquoise polo shirt on a guy who obviously does NOT live in California. Lots of embroidered cowboy shirts, jeans, boots, Indian skirts, and turquoise turquoise turquoise.

One of the reporters was an unusual person. She is very tall and built like a Samoan although she says she is from Arkansas. She was almost non-verbal which surprised me in a reporter. Almost impossible to carry on a conversation with her, although I did succeed in wrenching some information out of her. She lurked, that is the only word. Oh well, loads of strange folks out here in the desert.

Sounds like my kind of party..I too am a people watcher..

And I love cowboys!..My hubby was a cowboy when I met, well he wore cowboy boots and a cowboy hat... but later I found out he was really an Indian..for real..His Great Grandma's name was Miniwa Travelstead. I forgot what tribe though. He would always want the indians to win when we would go see a western.

Glad you had some fun. My turn next..

Snoozy..who's last fun outing was to go see Tom Jones in concert.

    It was a fund-raiser

I don't think you mentioned to me what the event was raising money for.

It's a small museum. This is a small town, uphill a bit from Palm Springs. Besides the hot water, our only claim to fame is this little museum which is the house of the first guy to live here. The native folks lived across the valley in the Indian Canyons where there is running water and shade. Anyway, this guy came to live here with his donkey named Christmas. He lived alone up here, built a strange cement house with little rooms all over the place. He built his rooms around his furniture so his wife couldn't take the furniture with her when she left. It's odd looking but also rather pretty. It was derelict when I first moved here, but some of the local business people got together and formed a foundation and got it repaired, put in a gift shop and lots of activities. He was an artist, I saw some of his paintings tonight. They were very interesting, although I think if you see one nude you've seen them all. His photo looks like a young Hemingway and I guess he was in Paris at the same time as Hemingway and those writers.

some women would love that, new furniture every place you go...must be small doorways or just small period?

Hortensia, your description is wonderful. I feel like a fly on the wall. How delightful and what a bit of serendipity for you. I washed cars at the church today to help send the kids to camp this summer. Went to a really cool dollar store and splurged and bought some hard to find things and went by the coolest library in the world for a Dave Matthews CD, got four CD's alltogether and a Maurice Sendak book to copy pictures from in my new sketch pad. Cooked a delicious supper, watched a Hallmark movie with Julian as we colored in our velvet butterfly poster we bought at the cool dollar store. I know, it doesn't compare to the museum party. No chance for anything cool like that unless we go to festival tomorrow in Grand Rapids.

I don't know, dollar stores are a lot of fun! It was fun for me to know at this party that my entire outfit cost less than $10 and yet I fit in just fine. I shop at thrift stores and dollar stores and places like Ross and Marshall's. The only thing I didn't have was the huge jewelry, but I wore my hippie necklace with bells on it, $1 at the thrift store, and looked fine.

Ooooo, I want to see a picture. I love thrift stores and garage sales, etc. The store we went to was called Dollar Stretcher. It's across from the church and I met the owner's wife when she was having her car washed. I got two sketch books with the smooth kind of paper that is a rare find. It's easy to draw on with mechanical pencil. We got the poster and felt tip pens, a three section spiral ring for me and two boxes of 12 Thinking of You cards that are very unique. Julian got four memo pads. Remember how magical small memo pads are to a kid? And two bottles of ice cold water for a buck. We spent $10. Oh and I met a nice lady who just happened to born and raised in Mobile, AL. I was born there and lived there until I was almost seven. We had a fun time comparing notes. It's on the Gulf coast.

I'd scan the photo and upload it, but I'm not good-looking at all, so probably better not. Suffice to say, I looked like a bright colorful hippie with cute shoes.

Who says you have to be good looking? I'm fat. But hey, you could put a daisy over your face and just show the outfit.
