All you need ta do is send $50, and it more than doubles THEIR gas mileage, their bank accounts, etc. It's just soupy sales. Glad you don't have to pay for your gas.

seems like we had the same problems in the late 70's ...last time we had a push to blend grain based alchohol as a fuel. Ethanol-Alcohol raises hell with all the rubber seals hoses and gaskets in a gasoline fuel system.
Stupid question... do you have to dry corn destined for an ethanol distellery like you do corn headed to a feed mill? Drying feed corn is a big cost... lots of LP and natural gas goes up in flames in grain drying. That cant make the fuel cheaper if it has to be done.

Drying grain is not just a matter of feed.
1. Dry grain weighs less and buyers dont want to buy water.
2. 'wet' grain doesnt store well.
3. 'wet' grain is a hazard. It has a tendency to spontaneous combust in storage.Answer to your question. Most probably.

I agree that any kind of grain based fuel seems to be a non-starter. It sounds really good at first, but the math is kinda "so close but yet so far" in terms of really making a dent worth making, when you consider the downsides alongside the positives.
However, the numbers get pretty interesting with vertically grown algae, processed to extract oil; I'm not holding my breath, but it really seems like this could be a game changer.

I figured... I was one of the guys who used to dry the stuff out. I am glad I am out of that... LP bills were bad enough when it was cheap.

6o9,
Yes, of all the alternatives, pond scum seems to be the best answer.
Who would have ever guessed?

I am wondering what's going to happen to ethanol. It has supposedly been driving up the food costs (as someone on this thread already mentioned), and appears not to be the answer at this point.
It just seems as if everything at this point is a catch 22 situation.

The Brazillians use it so it is no big deal if you ar eset up and ggeared up for it and no the problems.
The biggest in my mind you have mentioned -water solubility which long term means corrosion issues - perhaps a catastrophic failure some day.
It is a bit like nuclear. The French have learned how to handle it.
I agree though, Ethanol is NOT The magic bullet
