For a brief time I worked in an office that had a really kool phone system. You could transfer any incoming call to any phone number. We got telemarketing calls all the time... I would just say, "hold please" and transfer them to the electric company or movie theater...or wherever I felt in the mood to send them....

Locally, they used to really promote the newspaper (back when there were two - and they competed for readership numbers).

Anyway, I would get solicitors calling frequently - asking if I wanted to subscribe to their paper. They always have this fantastic deal - hard to refuse, etc.

I would just tell them that I couldn't read.

They would go... almost spastic... how do you deal with that? They would tell me about all of the great coupons in the paper each week.

    I can't read.

Well... on Sundays... they have the comics - in color.

    I can't read.

    ...and so on.

They would finally give up... barely.

P.S. I suppose, I could've told them that I'm blind... do they have it in Braille?

I was lonely in my apartment years ago, and a woman with a sexy voice called trying to sell me a magazine subscription.
She hung up when my flirtation "crossed the line". Black underwear was all the detail I could get out of her. She may have
been lying. I guess I'll never know...

I always liked the Jerry Seinfeld approach. When he got a telemarketer call he said, "could I have your home phone number so I can call you back later?" the telemarketer obviously says no on the other end and he says, "Oh you don't like people calling you at home when it's most inconvenient either?" then he hangs up the phone. Priceless.

    I completely forgot!

Speaking of 'telemarketers' - my wife stayed home from work yesterday. She sez the phone rings - she looks at the Caller-ID, and it shows 'Jehovah's Witnesses' - or somesuch - so she decides to let the answering machine take the call.

I listened to the recording later... something about their giving out some brochure, and she wanted to make sure that we got our copy (riiiiight!). If not, we are to call her at 555-1234 (not the real number).

So... I'm sitting there... trying to think of a way to call back... after first dialing *68 (or whatever the code is to hide our number from their caller-id).

My first thought was to ask how they got the unlisted number? Let them know that it is to a safe-house for the FBI... and that now we have to include them in the subpoena for the upcoming trial of the mobster that has agreed to testify and that we have in the witness protection program - since they have spoken to him, and now possibly know his name and address - they will now need to be present at the trial, and will possibly have to testify in court.

...or some such... just to play with them... maybe shake them up a little.

When I get a call, I just ask if they can hold on a minute. Then I put the phone down and walk away. They usually hang up after 10 minutes or so.

I used to be a telemarketer. Worst. Job. Ever.

Thanks for the reminder. You've inspired me to get myself registered, here in Canada, at least, on the "do not call" list. They also have information on how to deal with telemarketers who don't take "no" for an answer.

Please forgive the serious answer, but honestly truly, the number of calls we receive is abusive.
