I believe the Watchtower is hoping that their involvment with The United Nations is something that will fade away and be forgotten! When I was an Elder, I would have left the Organization immediately had I known that! What hypocrisy after all they printed about The UN Beast of Revelation, and here they were a supporter of it as a NGO.
Everyone, should have the facts on hand if needed, and never let the issue die.

If Jehovah let the water in through the firmament then why couldn't he use the UN to benefit his book printing business?
I so agree with you! This was the issue that drove us out. As soon as we found out we wrote the Society and got a very unsatisfactory response justifiying their actions.
From that moment on we did not go in FS and began to fade from the meetings. How could we invite others to join us in this hypocritical religion?
While some may not see this as a big deal, I saw it as HUGE. Hypocrysy and "true" religion are incompatible.

I remember years ago reading the Watchtower on the beast of Rev. and no mention was made of the U.N just "Governments" in general...I thought this was "new light" until I found out why they toned it down.....
Yeah, this pissed me off royally. I don't care if it was a library card or a bathroom pass, it was guilt by association.
Die instead of saying heil Hitler but it's OK for the WTS to sign a paper that promises support of the charter of the Beast.
What about Malawi JW's who refused on orders from the WTS to buy a political party card, hmm?
They were tortured and killed for refusing a card.

Well it may have been a storm in a teacup for you. But I knocked on doors for years telling all who would listen it was the Beast !!!!!!

I think this was a big part of my wife's waking up. I think also that if her grandmother had lived longer she too would have closed the door on them.
After I told my wife about the UN thing she went to her gma (also a dub but a very very nice one) and they wrote the society and got the form lie back... However they KNEW it was a lie from the little bit of research they had done. Gma was very upset and said "I can't believe that they would just LIE to us about it... If you make a mistake just come clean and say you made a mistake and your repentant! Isn't that what the elders say in JC meetings? Why is this different?"
She lived for about 3 year after that and I don't think she ever went to another meeting. My wife went to meetings for about 6 months after but never had the same zeal and faded within a year and told the family that she was done with the witnesses within two...
So yes this IS a big deal for many. Especially the die hards. If you show a die hard where a man even an important man messed up or was a jack hole they say "yes but the ORG is perfect." If you can get them to look at this where they were betrayed (yes BETRAYED is the right word it's just that important) by the ORG and they are mad enough to write then your looking at a hardcore dub who I believe soon won't be... My wife was a hardcore bible thumper regular pioneer, her grandmother had been a witness for 40 YEARS these people weren't spiritually weak or 'on the fence' as to the witnesses. The UN debacle combined with malawi is you biggest weapon against hardcore witnesses.
Very, very few in my cong know about this (probably the elders, and a select few "evil" internet researchers), I know my wife doesn't...and now it's several years old. I would love so much to watch another Dateline expose about this and other things. It's strange that major US news papers did not pick up on this story that broke in 'The Guardian' (british paper) or maybe a few did?? Seems the media is always looking for a good religious scandel. Library card my ass. Hipocrits!
