In my sociology and psychology studies, I learned that the two great needs of mankind are meaning and belonging. You need to have some meaning, some purpose, to life, and you need to belong. So many people today don't have any meaning in their lives and they don't belong anywhere. That's the problem of our society in a nutshell.
I'm going to use this in my thank you letter for my interview with Americorps. I had more privilege in my life than Billie Davis. Yet in its own way, my life has been full of challenges and obstacles that must be overcome or else they would be the end of me. Somehow, though, I have kept coming back up. Everytime I have been knocked down, rather like one of those blow up clown toys (with the sand in the bottom) that children knock down over and over again, I keep coming back up like old faithful. Sometimes it takes longer to rise above things, but so far, I always do.
I look at Billie's life as one of adventure. And mine is a life of adventure, too. Her life took her places. My life takes me places. Her life was not easy. Mine has not always been easy. The thing is, this kind of adventure can hone the truest of hearts and the deepest of souls, for that I am grateful.
Thank you for sharing this, Co Co.
