Does anyone know what happened to Rutherfords wife and son? I had read somewhere he had sent them away, but what was the reason? With the Society's emphasis on how important the family unit is, how is Rutherfords case explained?

I think they just lived out their lives apart from Rutherford. I remember reading somewhere, (but have no idea where), that neither of them even showed up for the old guy's funeral.

I didn't even know they were missing.
Seriously, the wife lived in a second Watch Tower Corporation mansion in San Diego. Ed Gruss is your guy. He's got the history down. -

Gary, did Mary live in Beth Sarim? I thought she lived in the LA area. Or, did she move there later?

Rutherford had a particularly negative view of marriage, as reflected in magazines during his time. The Golden Age 1937 January 27 edition contained an article “That Delusion Called Love” that contained bizarre statements and recommendations, such as promoting arranged marriage. It concluded:
“God’s consecrated people do well to refrain from marriage unless they find themselves continually tormented with desire for sexual intercourse, in which case they should marry. … For those of the younger or older who have need to marry on this score, let them dispose of the matter in candor and honesty … shunning the blight, the delusions and illusions of “love” so called and courtship, which bring reproach on the holy name of Jehovah.”
I have also read that his wife and son did not attend his funeral.

"Shunning the blight, the delusions and illusions of “love” so called and courtship, which bring reproach on the holy name of Jehovah.”
Oh this is just crazy bitterness. With all the talk about caring for family it's odd that no one called hi on this. Until this last year I never read anything that I can recall, that he was married.
Based on the circumstances of his death it's apparent that his family thought little of him.
Were there any grandchildren? Anyone around that can recall family matters? -

At one point Rutherford's son, Malcolm, worked as Rutherford's stenographer. . . I think. I know I have seen it posted here.
Here is some info.

The links below will take you to the exact post in the above thread
Merry Magdalene does a time line on page 2 that is excellent job - Re: Rutherford Exposed: The Story of Berta and Bonnie (redux) It shows when Mary and her son lived based on census roles and various mentions in WT publications.

The Stedman address is the address listed on Mrs. Rutherford's 1963 obituary.
As Malcolm died in 1989, this indicates that he held onto that particular property for a good number of years.

This post also has an image of Malcolm. I have seen the same image with Malcolm cited as a stenographer.
In 1900 census Malcolm C. Rutherford, 17, who was employed as "Mail Clerk -- Bible & Tract Soc."
In 1920 census Malcolm Rutherford, 26, born in Missouri and who was employed as an "Attorney at Law",
In 1930 census Malcolm indicated that his job was "Clerk -- Superior Court".
There are addresses for all of these
At some point Malcolm left his father and neither he nor his mother who was still legally married to the Judge at the time of his death went to the funeral

I was thinking Mrs Rutherford lived at Beth Shan but she apparently didn't. I must have dreamt that one night.
