This really needs to be repeated more often. I have long suspected that we have a lot of participants here who somehow think that Russell was relatively guilt-free (compared to the horrible Rutherford), and so think that his ideas are nearly worth following.

I have to read in detail the extensive list Terry has prepared.

I do want to say this....Russell was dishonest in his chapter concerning The Great Pyramid that was in Volume 3 of the Studies in the Scriptures.

    In what way?

In that Russell, when republishing a drawing of The Great Pyramid that appeared in Piazzi Smyth's book, left out critical numbers that were in the original drawing. These numbers gave dimension of the interior of the Great Pyramid that would have cast doubt on Russell's chronological interpretation.

Russell had made up numbers for the Great Pyramid so as to support his chronology, and he knew all along that what he claiming was dubious .

But he chose to obscure the fact that he was streching things in order to have them fit his argument.

If one makes a prophetic chronological calculation, then one is obligated to give exact details of the calculation and sources for the numbers used. this Russell did NOT do.

    Dishonest! Dishonest! Dishonest!

Russell even wrote in the 1916 edition of SiS3 that there was much that would have to be re-written in the volume, but he never got around to doing it.

A modern day example of a C.T.Russell faker is HAL LINDSEY and his predictive, interpretive End Times books (starting with THE LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH.)

His books sell millions. He is always always (did I mention always?) revising and changing and flip flopping on his specificities.

But--does this bother his faithful readers?

    NOT ONE BIT.

This is something that truly excites Christians to read about the very idea that THEY are living in End times.

End times calculations and speculations are the pornography of spiritual literature.

"Finally, it would not be amiss to conclude that Biblical chronology is the play dough of millenarians. It can be stretched to fit whatever time-table is needed, or it can be reduced to a meaningless mass of dates and figures so that future predictions can be molded out of the original lump." page 183, Jehovah's Witnesses: The Effects of Millenarianism on the Maintenance of a Religious Sect, Melvin D. Curry, 1980, PH.D. Dissertion, The Florida State University.

Here is the drawing of The Great Pyramid that Russell published in "Studies in the Scriptures", volume 3.

Smyth's oringial drawing...Note that Rusell in his drawing left out all dimesions for the descending passage.

There is no doubt at all about this. Russell didn't want the facts to get in the way of his telling a good story!

    Good info. VM interesting stuff

Maybe on his Tomb stone they should have written under " The Laodician Messenger "

" The Great Con Man " of a generation !

Yes, Russell was a con man!

Just look at those drawings and ask yourself, "Why did Russell reproduce everything in Smyth's drawing EXCEPT the measurements for the descending passage?"

Russell knew that most people would not be comparing his drawing with that of Smyth's.

What else is this but evidence of his delibrate attempt to coverup the shaky foundation of his Pyramid chronology?

I wonder if he was selling this at the same time he was selling his miracle wheat

Russell's book "Thy Kingdom Come" in which the chapter about The Great Pyramid appeared was first published in 1890.

The "Miracle Wheat" court case was in 1913.

    Russell died October 31, 1916.
