I agree with fe203Girl that there are larger issues than this, however the fight for freedom often starts in a small, even silly way. A couple of interesting laws passed recently in the UK could be used to stop the JW's door to door work,or at least make it less easy, and in public places giving out many tracts. These laws weren't aimed at JW's but it would be fun to see them used, how many JW's would then just preach in public with just the bible?

"That" is already happening - does anyone seem bothered?

"This" is a debatable example. In the UK, you can smoke in your own car, your own house, your own garden, any street, or outdoor space. If you don't smoke, you can work, eat a meal or have a drink without breathing someone else's smoke.

Are there areas of the USA where it is illegal to drink in public areas? Is that an infringement of civil rights?

Not to be dragged away to a detention camp without legal recourse, a much more important freedom than being allowed to inflict secondhand smoke on people who happen to share your workspace (whether that be a car or an office)

There is no law preventing you from smoking in your own car, the comparison with the restrictions on drinking age and drinking in public is a good one.

Fe2 I have never heard of any case where you could not smoke in your own car, that is unless your carrying around extremely flammable material. To tell someone they can't do something that only does harm to them is in my personal opinion a blatant case of civil liberties being infringed (and yes I also think people should be able to smoke crack in private). The worst part is his partner was smoking also, this is an obvious case of infringing on civil liberties. It has NEVER BEEN PROVEN SECOND HAND SMOKE CAUSES CANCER. So even the, "hey don't give me cancer" excuse is not factually correct.

    ***EDITED***

There have been new studies showing some links to second hand smoke and cancer, but it has yet to really be proven. I concede that it's probably 90% correct that second hand smoke harms when always around it, but in small social settings I'm not so sure.

Hitler didn't smoke, and he started an antismoking campaign.

' It seems that Hitler was a smoker in his youth but at some stage he became aware of its health hazards and, when in power (perhaps with the zeal of a convert), appeared to detest tobacco, which he called "the wrath of the Red Man against the White Man, vengeance for having been given hard liquor." But the antismoking campaign reflected "a national political climate stressing the virtues of racial hygiene and bodily purity" as well as the Fuhrer's personal prejudices. The same could be said of Nazi efforts to discourage drinking and encourage a better diet.

The state performer in antismoking propaganda was Adolf Hitler. As one magazine put it: "brother national socialist, do you know that our Führer is against smoking and think that every German is responsible to the whole people for all his deeds and emissions, and does not have the right to damage his body with drugs?"'

    I keep saying:

YOU CAN SMOKE IN YOUR OWN CAR!!!!!!!

He was fined because the official believed he was smoking in a business vehicle. If it is his own vehicle, not insured for business use, and not offset against tax for business purposes, he can smoke in it to his heart's content!!!

You can smoke in your own private vehicle.

You can smoke in your own vehicle.

    How is this complicated?

Oh ok well lets agree on this, the government should not be able to tell private businesses that they have to enforce smoking laws. If his boss allows him to smoke then this is a violation of civil liberties.
