My dentist talked me out of an implant. Said they were uncomfortable. So I had a bridge put in. He didn't tell me he had to grind down two perfectly good teeth as part of the proceedure. If I had to do it again, I'll go with the implant.

Thats why I don't want a bridge either, haven't heard that they are uncomfortable though. Thanks

I was in a auto accident awhile ago and I'm still waiting for the settlement I lost 4 teeth in that accident and I'm in the process of having an implant done on one of them the others you really can't tell so I'm just gonna get a plate done.

But anyway, it's a long process and even longer if you have bone loss because they have to do a bone graft to build it up. So yeah, I think it's worth it, very expensive and long process but worth it. I'll let you know how I make out. Right now I've had the bone graft and it will be another 9 - 12 months for that to heal before they can start the process of the implant.

Thanks nj, good luck with the surgery. I think I'm gonna go with the implant. The Borg

If you don't have enough natural tooth structure to properly maintain a conventional crown, you may need to have the residual tooth structure removed.

To fill the space where the missing tooth is, you essentially have 4 choices:

    1. Do nothing. Benefit: Initially free but more costly later. Downside: surrounding and opposing teeth start drifting to fill in the vacant space. Eventually more teeth can be lost because of the drifting. Also, cosmetic and function concerns.

    2. Make a cast bridge where the teeth on either side of the space are ground down and a 3-unit toothlike structure is placed. The two crowned teeth are called abutments and the 'false' tooth in the middle is called a pontic. Draw back: Since all the units are cast together, if one of the abutment teeth fail, the entire bridge is usually lost.

    3. Make a removeable bridge or partial that clasps in place and can fill in other spaces on the same arch. Draw back: Catches food and sometimes make people feel older.

    4. Implant Crown. Implant is imbedded the bone and a crown is built onto the portion that sticks up out of the gums. Draw back: Initially More Pricey and Takes time for osseointegration (adherance of the implant to the bone). Benefit: Hygienic. Cosmetic. No involvement of surrounding teeth.

Implant dentistry has come a LONG way in the past 30 years. Give it some serious consideration as you make your decision.

That's a shame. It may be that you dentist was untrained in new procedures. The initial surgery to actually place the implant may be somewhat uncomfortable but not really much worse than an extraction (and you can be put to sleep, too). My experience is that most people are generally MUCH happier with an implant crown than with a conventional bridge. 18 months after completion, the implant patients often forget they have them. Patients with cast bridges are often still packing food under the pontic and their bite may be slightly off. If you start to have trouble with one of the abutment teeth, the entire bridge may be trashed.

    Bummer.

I lost my tooth when I was 14, I fell over ice skating with my first serious girlfriend. Fell flat on my face and broke my tooth clean in half.

Awe…..I bet the real story is that he went to touch her boob, she turned around and hit him, breaking his tooth, and then he ended up face down on the ice….

The only drawback of implants is the cost - $7,000. The procedure is relatively easy and painless. ( I had the bone grafting - that was uncomfortable.)

Yes. Can bone grafting can be downright painful depending on where they pull the bone from.

Thanks for the input Aud. I've been weighing it up for a while.

Will probably go for the implant.
