Don't be so sensitive and set proper boundaries.

No offence to the British - some of my best friends are British.

I'm not sure if this is the case, but it's a fairly common thing for British to insult you in clever ways. They'll say something that sounds OK, but then a minute later you realize they just insulted you. I think it's a kind of game. Whatever it is - just give back as good as they dish out, and you'll be ok.

That’s a really good point there MissingLink…….I think that you are right…….although, I would say that it would take you Irish boys at least 3 minuets…….

Be very nice to your wife.

There is nothing wrong with a bit of competition. Competing for her affections may actually improve your relationship with her. She willl feel valued by you.

    Cheers

Sounds like to me he's making a play on your wife. Bringing her flowers and telling her what a woman she is. Seems like trying to make you look bad or something.

I would tell him straight up if I was in your situation that if that was the case that I would rip that ugly thing he calls a head off his shoulders and spit down his neck.
Then if he gets real defensive by saying something like I was just being friendly and joking with my british style humor, tell him that you was joking too kinda, maybe and he took it to personal but to always remember what you just said in case he ever tought about going beyond just friends with your wife.

in the old days over here there used to be the englishman scotsman and irishman jokes, these were taken over by the 'essex girl' jokes

english humour can be a little weird.

hopefully its just a humour mismatch thing, if it gets on your tits too much just tell him.

Firstly its probally just a bad case of British "humour".

I think us British kinda forget how dry we can be. Generally we just insult each other.... kinda like mild bullying. The whole point being, its funny when someone gets upsets.

Compliments, are generally avoided or hidden insults.
Expect plenty of sarcasm and black humour..
I dont think british people dislike americans or canadians i think they find there sensitive side ammusing.

Watch the "the office" and so and you should start getting an idea... might make it more bearable..
Sounds to me there trying to make a new start,

Us english could moan for england! its like our national pastime!! Oh yeh ESSEX is a real place !!

Its definately british male humour to "take the mick" out of other men.

Believe me when I tell you that some british men use this ALL the time when they interact with other men. They look for something they can mention which is kind of a "dig" and the idea is that you give it straight back to him. He is probably wondering why you don't return the banter!

Between good friends it can go like this:

    "Hows it going, small cock?"

    "Good, limp wrist"

    (both laugh)

"What was <insert football players name> thinking? What a knob head"

"I know, I mean he was offside every five seconds"

    Then gets serious...

"Hey I had to leave that job today... redundancy looking for a new one now...again"

"Oh mate, thats crap. What you gonna do, go back to stripping?" (laughs)

So you see....they kind of take the mick out of each other and both understand that the other one doesn't mean it.

The only other explanation is that the guy is genuinely nasty and jealous of what you have. But I suppose thats up to you to judge. One thing you can be sure of, he isn't trying to "run things" he probably is just insecure.
