It is true, you don't have any rights here. Only the forum owner has rights over the site. But just because someone has the right to do something, it doesn't make it nice. It doesn't promote a feeling of "everyone welcome" (as per the website logo), particularly for a subset of former JWs who are among those who often need help the most. People don't have to be nice. But they can.
The initial issue was about posting entirely inappropriate imagery and other explicit irrelevant content (which I have not seen, and don't need to). In attempting to deal with the issue, broad sweeping insinuations were made about an entire subset of people. People who have already been made to feel like outcasts by JWs and often by non-JWs as well have been made to feel unwelcome here too, causing some to leave.
En masse warnings to "gay posters", and statements such as "no wonder people hate gays" because of the actions of a vocal minority are unnecessary and unhelpful, as has been demonstrated. I do think Simon should apologise (if he hasn't already?) for a few things he said. Not because he has to. Because he can.
Anyone with half a brain should be able to determine the difference between mildoccasional flirting or inuendo and material that is inappropriate in non-adult rated threads. Obvious/deliberate violators should be blocked. Mercilessly. More vague cases can be dealt with through other moderator methods. (Even in 'adult' threads people should remember this is a religious discussion forum, not a porn site). A double-standard of where to draw the line for different sexualities is not a mature solution.
This issue is the fault of a few stupid people posting inappropriate material. It's not Simon's fault, and it's not "the gays'" fault. But it would be a real shame if some poor young gay JW struggling with their situation didn't feel welcome on this site as a result of the actions of a few people who happen to be crass jerks.
