Yeah….I get out on the bike….although I will say that I have not been out for a goodly while. I wanted to get out this year (still haven’t yet, lazy slob that I am, and feel it too) but just haven’t seemed to manage it. I keep putting it off because I know that it is going to hurt….

Wish that I would have kept up the fitness from over Christmas last year, when I went to Snowdonia, Wales, which has the Marin trail to ride around. (Really recommend it if there are any Brit enthusiasts.) Good for winter riding, as there is not too much mud…..

But alas, I let the fitness go, and now I’m a fat slob……and when you are in that condition, it is going to hurt to change it…. But no pain no gain right…??

Give it a few weeks and you will be ok. Every other day is good as well…… (Must take my own advice….What a hypocrite…..)

    Looking glass....I hear you!

Anyone who thinks going down is not exercise, try it and let me know after a day or two how YOUR legs are feeling.

I am LOL....coming down a mountain in Germany seemed easy, I was almost running. For the next 3 days I could not sit down without screaming in pain. It requires muscles we usually don't use very often. It seemed to be around the hips and upper thighs......muscles I never knew existed even with gym workouts.

I don't think I've used them since here in flat Florida.

I...like you...used to ride nice light road bikes with skinny tires. Man what a difference on the wide tire bikes....I think I may have to dust off my old road bike. And if you get a chance please read my appeal to you I just posted....thanks........I road with Team Toga...btw........oompa

I have a Trek 3900 mountain bike with panniers in the back. Most of the time I use it for short trips to the store. I live at sea level, so riding is easy. But there are some small mountains that separate the coast where I live from the inland valley plain, and I occasionally take my bike for a ride over the hills. That said, I am not in great shape even though I'm not particularly over weight either.

    Simon,

I am no spring chicken....but Mr. Bee and I with several friends, biked through France and Italy in June and came back to Europe in July to bike through Germany, Austria, and Slovakia. It is wonderful way to see the world..........each evening, after 3-7 hours of biking, a warm shower and a cold beer NEVER will feel or taste as good.................

I don't. I'm glad if I can walk to the plaza without tripping and falling flat on my face. I'm a clutz, and would probably kill myself if I tried biking.

But, if you know anything about the Toronto Beaches in the eastend of this city; don't laugh. Some of thoes inclines from Queen Street up to either Kingston Road or Gerrard Street, will leave you feeling like you've reached the summit of one of the Rocky Mountains.

GOOD: Simon, keep pedalling. It's good for you.

Jasper to Banff. I have done the reverse, in a car which was dead easy 16 years ago.

Now I am headed out to Alberta again, but I doubt I'll have access to a bicycle. Wish I did, would love to try to pedal the foothills near where I am staying.

I know Shamus100 is an avid cyclist/mountain climber.

That not withstanding, still...good on ya! for pedalling some of those wicked hills there in southern Alberta.

I'm on the South side of 68 and ride from 10-12 miles per (non-golfing) day on my mountain bike. For golfing days that means some 5 miles of hilly walking (there are still a handful of walkers at our club) and ball-striking.

I don't think it's bad for an old man who had bypass heart surgery in 1990. I renetly wore out my first (1992) bike (a $400 model) and believe it or not, found a decent replacement at Wal-mart for $139.

Here in South Arkansas my riding season is when the temperature is above 70 degrees F., from March through November. In March my biggest problem is getting used to a sore butt. Yes, I've tried different seats.

The following photo was published several weeks ago in TIME. Note what these Tour de France riders are doing prior to a large hill climb in order to strengthen their lungs.

When I lived in Banff, 18 or so years ago now, I hiked more than I biked but I did cycle out to Lake Minnewanka close to Banff. Nice little run but rather easy compared to some of the trails out there.

    Beautiful country out there.

Yes we're big cyclists. Melancholy is incompatible with a bicycle!

Thanks Simon, so much, to you and Ang for this site. I'm among the many whose lives were transformed and saved by your efforts. I hope that your new life is magnificent. It surely already is!
