Where did you find a 40+ lb turkey? Certainly not at Safeway. That baby looked like it was fresh, eh?
Did you worry about stuffing such a big bird and cooking it so slow, 19+ hours before you served it? You know the bacteria deal?
Now you got me going Marylin, next year I will be looking for a 46.5 lb turkey, just because, because.
This year I cooked the smallest bird ever 14.75 lbs, but had a huge amount of trimmings. We still had plenty left to make everyone at least one turkey/mayo sandwich on friday. I cooked it in one of those baking bags, just a little over 2hrs....perfect and moist. If you are in a hurry those bags work great.
Great pictures, great cooking....ain't life grand sometimes?
My mother-in-law's husband raised them on his farm. He said he still has one in the freezer that is bigger. I guess he feeds them well! It was really good, still have some in the fridge...must make sandwiches.
That was the grossest looking bird when it was cooked but it sure was good.
Mom really gets nasty when you talk about messing with the turkey. I personally love them on the barbecue. The Prince is good at that! We are heading down to the farm in week and they are going to deep fry one. Should be good.
It may have been ugly, but it smelled good. I must say that from the picture that is the whitest bird I have ever seen! No wonder it was so healthy, living on the family farm.
The more I hear about you nor-western clan of Mulan, the more I enjoy the stories of your adventure's camping, cooking, and fellowship. You guys are so blessed to have each other...unfettered by WT chains. Your family, Venice and her parents, give us total 'black sheep' or should I say 'walking dead' to our families....real hope.
Good Gawd man....what kind of women have you been hanging out with buddy? I am becoming seriously concerned about the affect this obvious bad association is having on you.
Meet me in the Spanking Room for some behavior modification therapy.
(((mulan)))))))) man o man!! That thing wasbig enuff to reister for a drivers license!! What a great family and experience thanks for sharing!(got any leftovers there ?lol) Hi danny, I agree,I alawys see that about Mulan and her family. It's very life affirming and gives hope to us about our families!
Mulan and family live an area of the US that is very beautiful...to much rain though.
Mulan was unfortunate enough to have had my brother-in-law CO and my silly sister visit them. She was able to share some stories about them. Since I have not seen or heard from my sister in over 20 yrs, this meant alot to me. Thanks again Mulan.
Thanks for giving me a hello Tina. I appreciate your kind effort.
i must confess, ive never heard of a 46 lb. turkey. mine was 24 lbs, and i thought that was large. im going to your grocery store next year mulan!
andi-
thanks for the tip, ill have to try that one of these years (i especially like the sound of the lemon with the apple; i imagine that makes a nice aroma along with a change of pace flavor).
everyone seems to have their own sure fire way to prevent the dreaded dry turkey, so ill post my secret here too, and i swear by it. i rub the turkey with good old fashioned garlic salt and pepper, stuff it, and stick it in a turkey bag along with one bottle of chardonnay (doesnt have to be expensive, the cheaper stuff works just as good). and i too must brag, ive never had a dry turkey yet, its wonderful. the best part is the gravy. im sure you all know the trick of adding flour to the turkey juice in a skillet......well ill tell ya', that wine just makes an awesome gravy! whisk the flour in there slowly (to prevent lumps) over low heat, and add salt and pepper to taste (and i like just a small squeeze of lemon). presto!
