what would you think

    John,

The main focus of any successful discussion forum should be information.

Information is the life blood of a forum. Chat, while usefuul can bury the heart of a forum. If you make a discussion site interesting, vibrant and informative the problems with anti-social behavior will be minimized. Have a board that makes no pretensions to 'support' or 'help'. The best of help, especially to curious, anxious or desperate JW's is information. Even if the Board gets wild on occasion, they will return to LEARN.

This was the real success story of this Board in the early days. That is why there is a clamoring for it to be archived. Not because of the 'cuddly', back-slapping threads, they will be forgotten in days, but because of the tremendous fund of information that make up its annals.

Interesting concept. What would be your approach to encouraging such posts?

Random ranks would also prevent groups of friends from just bumping each other up to become untouchable. It would be a fair spectrum of the entire communities thoughts.

I don't really like the idea of random rankings, and here's why. At least on the software I've looked into, the ranking system is set up by posts. In other words, you're not ranking the poster, you're ranking the post. The poster is then ranked according to their accumulated post rankings. This allows the person to see in detail which posts are good and which are not. Furthermore, the person giving the ranking can leave a detailed statement regarding the ranking that can only be seen by the user.

That does change things. I doubt it would be possible any way. Sometimes I just like to think "aloud".

Oh, and it won't let me fix my typo... says my last post was posted 5 hours ago. Has anyone else noticed such a glitch?

Jackie, I do agree that the popularity contest might prove to be the largest problem with the rating system. I do think it can be worked around though.

What really put this into my head was when user "ode to blue" was spamming the forum with porn. Wouldn't it have been nice to have users able to neg rep him in a few minutes and get him off rather than waiting for a moderator?

I think that's an excellent point to be made. An excellent point indeed.

There is no difference between being here, or being in a KH. If you say something to piss off a mod or an elder you get either banned/ df'd or you get your posting priveleges reduced/censured.

That's nice hypo, but it doesn't really relate to this thread.

where reputations are earned through a point system, and if enough negative rep was earned an automatic banning took place?

Great formula for promoting groupthink. Eventually a herd mentality prevails and unpopular opinions and view points get deprecated. It is inevitable in a system like this.

    Too true.

When the group thinks, it may not be so dangerous, but XJW's carrying baggage - duck for cover.
