Well, every other country in the world manages to print notes of different denominations in different sizes and colours so the visually-impaired have no difficulties using them. It also makes it easy to tell at a glance how much money you have in your wallet, and it's much harder to make mistakes. But Americans seem to have stubbornly resisted that innovation too.

Is there any thread that you can't use as a dig against Americans, FD? Damn the envy is thick over there.

Probably not, but generally I don't. This thread is about Americans and I pointed out a relevant quirk of the USA's monetary system . I didn't even offer an opinion as to why this is an issue, just that it is and the solution used in almost every other country in the world is a good one. So not sure why you perceive it as a "dig". A little over-sensitive perhaps?

That's it. People only criticise your country because they're envious.

I have an even better idea. Just get rid of the Fed. In doing that, we could see our income taxes totally disappear. The government could then print up money, backed by gold, and that would hold inflation in check. And the value of the dollar could be set so gold could cost $35 an ounce (or, maybe now is the time to go metric and set gold at $1 a gram). Then watch the penny gain back its value.

    And the dollar bills.

The FED has very little to do with income taxes.

That said, I am also a hard money advocate.

In my trips up to the "great white north" I learned to appreciate those loonies & toonies.
Being able to buy a few beers w/ a pocket full of change wasn't bad.

We simultaneously need to get rid of pennies to offset the weight in the pockets though.

Well our paper money comes in different colours, only starts at R10. We have R1, 2 & 5 coins. We no longer deal in 1c or 2c either. Works fine for us.

Ha ha.....Welcome to the world! We've got $1.00 coins and $2.00 coins here in Canada......My understanding is that they're thinking of getting us $5.00 coins next.

I guess it helps cut back on counterfeits.......

Well, it may not be a choice as some have pointed out. Curious why the Gov. hasn't forced the issue in the past by simply not printing the dollar bills and letting them disappear through 18 month attrition. .

If that is what it comes too then those of us who don't like the coins will either accept them or douse ourselves in gasoline and light a match in front of the Capitol bldg. I don't feel that strongly about it but it did go to 2 pages so far.
