For many years it beat the odds. Unfortunately the odd now may play against them
New Orleans is a lost cause...

We have been there 6 or 7 times including Mardi Gras in 2004.
IMO, it's a sleezy, fun city.
I'm not sure I would want to live there because of the heat, but it's a great place to spend a weekend.

I really hope they take a direct hit and the empty city just gets wiped the f#ck out... I'm sorry but this world needs a wake up call... Clearly the environment is on the way back burner! Maybe if a major american city gets wiped out for the second time in 5 years people will wake up... Not hardcore evangelical republicans of course they are just to far gone but maybe intelligent people who are just in denial?
We have 4.00 gas, what should we do? Lets drill and mess up the planet even MORE! So what the if the environment is f'ed up! Lets f#ck it up more! Hell here's an idea lets elect two people who are totally in the pocket of big oil and one who thinks that endangered species should be wiped out so that the pipeline won't be inconvenienced!!! WTF is the MATTER with people!?
The amount spent on this stupid war over oil and rebuilding a city that is below sea level could have completely freed us from fossil fuels! It's INSANE! What will it take to wake us up and to make people realize that jesus IS NOT GOING TO FIX THIS! If we don't fix it now we are dooming our grandchildren!

Having lived in the Gulf Coast for a few years....I will say my ode to New Orleans. Part black magic, part Catholic....part old Southern charm, part hedonism.....part gator tail, part benoit.....part drunkin' orgy's on stage, part horse drawn carraige.......part shit hole, part debutantes and lace. New Orleanss, for me, is the gateouse to the mid-west, west, south, and the Carribean. It's a blended city that produced the the best food & drink. Labor Day weekend will always be a "Cajun" weekend for me. So, I raise my hurricane glass & toast the City of New Orleans a safe Labor Day weekend.

The reports as of now indicate that Gustav will veer lightly west of the city - not good. This brings the heavy rain and wind from the north and east across the lake where some of the weakest levees are.

I am sorry I never got to see New Orleans in the 1980s. I cancelled a trip because I couldn't get anybody to go with me. I was discouraged from going by people who said I wouldn't be safe if I went alone. I am sure it would have been nice to see it before Katrina devastated it.
This recent hurricane was only a category 2 and you saw water spilling over the levees. They haven't even recovered from Katrina. I also think it is a waste to rebuild something that is below sea level and the ocean levels are rising. So, what was once a moderate problem is now very serious.
I hate to say it but if they are hit with a category 4 or worse they have had it.

I've been there several times.
Smells of urine and vomit.
The music and the food are great, if you can get past the smell of urine and vomit.

Let us say the hurricanes miss this year and the government spends another 20 billion and the place is perfect again. Geography alone says A KATRINA could do the same thing all over again. If you build a house on a river flood plain; if you build a house at the foot of a volcano; if you build a house on the San Andreas fault-line -etc, etc - you have to expect damage of the worst kind.

Louisiana has been spending state and Federal flood control money on other stuff for years. I hate to see anyone suffer, but the levee system and loss of wetlands plus the evolution of the delta and the problems that causes have been known for years.
At least Bobby knows to ask for the emergency aid before the storm hits...Blanco did not... and set up a delay for aid that was a big part of the Katrina problem.
this isnt the first or last time we will lose a town on the Gulf...take care of the people...we can more stuff.
