The preview misses pages out. But the book itself only costs £15 or so on Amazon.
I prefer James Beckford's book and articles on JW history.
It's a shame no one has written an up-to-date comprehensive academic history of JWs. Penton's books could me much improved upon in my opinion.
I totally agree! Eventually we will see it. There light is gonna get darker and darker! There days are numbered!

Cool I loved your book Rivington! It has a proud place in my library already.
But it is not exactly a general history of JWs. It mainly deals with the chronology in the early days.
I wonder if you have read "Three Dissertations" by Greg Stafford. It covers some of the same ground as your book - with some interesting new quotes from WTs on the chronology angle too. You did your research mainly from the Studies in the Scriptures volumes whereas Greg Stafford looked at the WT articles.
I especially liked your argument that, as far as chronological systems go, Russell's made some sense and formed a coherent picture - whereas Rutherford took it apart bit by bit and what was left was contradictory and confusing.
You became a minister, didn't you? How's that going?
I've read Apocalypse Delayed. It is excellent. If you read it, you'll know more about the organization than 99.9% of active publishers.
Well, I for one really appreciated the research and hard work that went into James Penton's book, Apocalypse Delayed. I keep it handy for reference especially the historical sections of it.
It's easy to be a critic but much harder to be the scholar who has to do the work.

Is that why Penton copied portions of Timothy White's A PEOPLE FOR HIS NAME word-for-word without attribution?
I read both books around the same time and I thought there might be some plagiarism, but I never looked into it further.
Have you got proof Nathan Nates: quotes and page numbers?
I've got Timothy White's (Tony Wills) word for it.

Penton, in Apocalypse Delayed, cites White's book in several places. But, I've never seen evidence of "word-for-word" copying and I've read both books. Do you have any particulars to cite?
