Medicines
Certain medicines such as corticosteroids (for example, prednisone), antidepressants (for example, Elavil®), and medicines for seizures (for example, Neurontin®) may cause you to gain weight. These medicines can slow the rate at which your body burns calories, increase your appetite, or cause your body to hold on to extra water—all of which can lead to weight gain.
Emotional Factors
Some people eat more than usual when they are bored, angry, or stressed. Over time, overeating will lead to weight gain and may cause overweight or obesity.
Smoking
Some people gain weight when they stop smoking. One reason is that food often tastes and smells better. Another reason is because nicotine raises the rate at which your body burns calories, so you burn fewer calories when you stop smoking. However, smoking is a serious health risk, and quitting is more important than possible weight gain.
Age

Hormones that are released during sleep control appetite and the body’s use of energy. For example, insulin controls the rise and fall of blood sugar levels during sleep. People who don’t get enough sleep have insulin and blood sugar levels that are similar to those in people who are likely to have diabetes.
Also, people who don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis seem to have high levels of a hormone called ghrelin (which causes hunger) and low levels of a hormone called leptin (which normally helps to curb hunger).

I've known a few JW's over the past 40 years that were sooooo obese that some of them were in wheelchairs. Nothing was ever said to them and it made me wonder and doubt.
Why were smokers and overindulgers of alcohol DF'd?
It should be a two way street and not just pointing at one imperfection.

Gluttony, according to the quoted definition is excessive indulgence and voracious eating. You don't have to do either to gain weight. And you can do either and remain thin. For those of you whose thinking is simiplistic enough to wonder why overweight people were not disfellowshipped: where do you draw the line on being overweight? 5lbs over? 10? 20? 50? 100? 200? The person who is 200 lbs overweight may not eat anymore than a thin person or the person who is 10 or 20 lbs overweight.GLUTTON: A selfish, greedy person given to excessive indulgence, especially voracious eating. Gluttony in any form is diametrically opposed to Bible precepts and principles.

Don't forget that we're talking bible and wt policy here. Your question should be answered from the bible and the millie in which it was written. I'm not aware of any studies of what paul would consider gluttony.

True, however, the person who is overweight is not active enough or exercising enough to burn the calories they consume. They need to cut down on eating, become much more active, or both.
That makes all the difference in the world. That is why the thin person is thin, and the fat person is fat. Calories in must equal calories out (burned) or there will be weight gain.

You cannot say this is so in all individual cases. People differ. Some people walk and run miles per week and are careful with caloric intake and still are considered overweight. You cannot be this simplistic with every individual. Well, you can, but then you aren't being accurate.
And what you describe is not gluttony. You are speaking of metabolism of calories aided by exercise.
My point is, you cannot say a person is a glutton based on his or her weight or size. How much a person exercises or doesn't excercise has nothing to do with whether or not that person is a glutton.
