By my quick & rough estimates, the WTS has published 40,000+ pages of information in the Watchtower & Awake over th past 28 years since that article appeared.
Given that enormous output, it's not all that surprising that occasionally they would get lucky and appear to be prescient, if not prophetic.

LOL she didn't find it. Someone emailed it to her and then she emailed it to me. Always listen to the WBTS because they are always right! Except when they are wrong. And even THEN they are right! er

It's strange and perhaps amusing how selective JWs are when they dig up these old dusty articles. I've noticed that they never dig up old articles which emphatically pointed to 1975 - using world events as the "undeniable evidence" that the end was near. What about the "Millions Now Living Will Never Die" campaign? What about the talk J.F. Rutherford gave during WWII; stating that single people should not get married because of the end being "oh so close" ?
Me thinks the JWs have a case of selective amnesia.

and so undermining the functioning of our international monetary system that trade among nations would grind to a near standstill."
lets wait and see if international trade grinds to a standstill before proclaiming the Awake! a true prophet
the most notable thing that happened since the author penned these words is that she died. Death and taxes my friends, death and taxes. (and anthropogenic climate change)
Sylvia F. Porter The New York Post/Author
A true trailblazer, Sylvia F. Porter not only led the way for women personal finance writers, but personal finance writers in general. She began writing a column, "S.F. Porter Says" in the mid 1930s for The New York Post. Her personal finance column, "Your Money," which was syndicated by The Los Angeles Times, reached 40 million readers and appeared in 450 newspapers worldwide in its heyday. She offered advice in a second-person voice. On November 28, 1960, Time magazine devoted its cover to a profile of Ms. Porter. In 1978, she moved her home base to the New York Daily News, where it remained. In 1982, she founded her own magazine, Sylvia Porter's Personal Finance magazine. It folded in 1989. She wrote more than 30 books including Sylvia Porter's Money Book, which sold more than 1 million copies. She died in June 1991 at the age of 77.

I think the economic crisis is proof that the end is further away. According to the WT interpretation of revelation, when religion (babylon) falls the economic system (the merchants)look on saying "too bad too bad". How can they say to bad if they fall before religion?

I was sent a copy of that
It was from the early 1980's
You know, when all the SH*T was
starting to hit the fan
I guess they were just early
on their predictions
Or could just be a blind

Meaningless static
Maybe it was supposed to be
2075 instead of 1975

Billy the Ex-Bethelite
Watch Tower Corporation has never prophecied a total economic collapse before the "great tribulation", particularly in relation to Ezekiel 7:19. Even in the quote above from the 1980 Asleep! magazine, it fortells that 'the Bible speaks of a "great tribulation...." During that time, paper money will be worthless.' So, has the Great Tribulation already begun? Uh, nope.
The earth-shattering final warning to wicked mankind called the Keep on the Watch! brochure of 2004 (now no longer being printed), doesn't even refer to the scripture Ezekiel 7:19, or to the idea of a credit crisis to rock the world in 2008. Here's some older ones:
*** it-1 p. 594 Day of Jehovah ***
This day is detailed in the Scriptures as a time of battle, a great and fear-inspiring day of darkness and burning anger, a day of fury, distress, anguish, desolation, and alarm. "What, then, will the day of Jehovah mean to you people?" God asked wayward Israel by the mouth of his prophet Amos. This: "It will be darkness, and no light, just as when a man flees because of the lion, and the bear actually meets him; and as when he went into the house and supported his hand against the wall, and the serpent bit him." (Am 5:18-20) Isaiah was told: "Look! The day of Jehovah itself is coming, cruel both with fury and with burning anger." (Isa 13:9) "That day is a day of fury, a day of distress and of anguish, a day of storm and of desolation, a day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick gloom." (Zep 1:15) During such a time of trouble, one’s money is absolutely worthless. "Into the streets they will throw their very silver . . . Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of Jehovah’s fury."—Eze 7:19; Zep 1:18.*** g74 1/22 p. 8 Where Is Your Money Heading? ***When the "great tribulation" strikes, even the most stable of the world’s monetary systems will be unable to buy protection. The situation will then parallel that of the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem in the seventh century B.C.E. Regarding them, the prophet Ezekiel foretold:
"Into the streets they will throw their very silver, and an abhorrent thing their own gold will become. Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of Jehovah’s fury."—Ezek. 7:19.
So the danger in which we find ourselves today is far graver than the collapse of all national currencies. Bible prophecy clearly establishes that the generation now living faces an unequaled "great tribulation," at which time only an approved standing with God will be of any real value. (Matt. 24:34) People everywhere should therefore think seriously about what they can do to survive that destruction. Are you endeavoring to build up a record of fine works with the Creator so that you may be among those hidden in the day of his fury? So, if any dubs say that the current credit crisis fulfills what Watch Tower Corporation has been foretelling, they must mean that the Great Tribulation is already well underway, and the King of the North has acted with the UN and all the nations of the Earth to destroy Babylon the Great... invisibly, of course.
