For what it is worth, I heard similar things from Fundamentalist Christians even when I was a JW. I recall once talking to a man who believed that Hell exists within the Earth, and earthquakes are a sign of an expanding Hell. He cited some research project that had recorded the screams of Hell when they drilled a hole into the mantle somewhere. lol!

Sorry, I do not see the point. Where excatly do they spin the quote?
This is WT spin at it's subtlest. It's what they LEFT OUT when quoting the Indian seismologist.
"slightly heightened" is certainly no reason to jump up and down and say the Last Days are here, so the WT left those words out.
Also, the "last few years" might lead some to believe that the Last Days just started up in the last few years, so the WT left that out as well. If we take the seismologist's info at face value and combine it with current WT teaching re: the Last Days, here's what we get IMO:
The Last Days started in 1914 when Jesus invisibly took power. Seismic activity itself prior to the 20th Century is hard to quantify, but we can say that the destructiveness of earthquakes due to population increase has gone up. Now, approximately 90 years into the Last Days, seismic activity has increased "slightly" and that is another sign we're in the Last Days.
Of course, if the seismic activity goes back to where it was, they can still say the destructiveness is increasing.
No matter what happens, it's a sign we're in the Last Days.
Uh huh.

She asked, "so, why exactly are there increased earthquakes? What is the cause of it?" His answer? The "increased activity of the demons".
Pure mental garbage.
Why should anyone believe anything a JW tells them?
I have seen books on the geophysics of the earth, there is no mention in them as to the demons having any causal effect on seismic activity.
JWs are very superstitious and live in a demon haunted world.

A little research shows the duplicity of the WTS on this issue..
Aw 00 9/8 p27
"Those who study the Bible realize that it long ago foretold that the last days of this system of things would be marked by “earthquakes in one place after another.” (Matthew 24:7) But the Bible also provides assurance that soon, under the peaceful rule of God’s Kingdom, mankind will no longer live in fear of natural disasters. At that time the earth will truly be a paradise."
Aw 02 3/22 p9
"BEFORE his death, Jesus foretold events and situations that would give evidence that this world had entered “the conclusion of the system of things.” That period, he said, would be marked by such things as pestilences, food shortages, and large-scale warfare. He also mentioned “great earthquakes” that would occur “in one place after another.” (Matthew 24:3, 7; Luke 21:10, 11) Was Jesus referring to our day?
Many say no. They assert that the number of earthquakes has not substantially increased in recent decades. In fact, the U.S. National Earthquake Information Center reports that earthquakes of 7.0 magnitude and greater remained “fairly constant” throughout the 20th century.
Note, though, that the fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy does not require an increase in the number or power of earthquakes. All Jesus said was that there would be great earthquakes in one place after another. Furthermore, he stated that these events would mark the “beginning of pangs of distress.” (Matthew 24:8) Distress is measured, not by the number of earthquakes or how they rate on the Richter scale, but by the effect that they have upon people.
[Footnote] Some say that any reports of an increase in the number of earthquakes are simply due to advances in technology, which enable more seismic events to be detected." [end of quote]
The National Earthquake Information Center say under "Common Myths About Earthquakes"
"Although it may seem that we are having more earthquakes, earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have remained fairly constant throughout this century and, according to our records, have actually seemed to decrease in recent years. "

I love the way the WTS use the phrase "some say" in order to dismiss the comments of the very scientific body that they are quoting from!
Although they acknowledged that in 2002, it did not stop them printing this in 2005
What Does The Bible Really Teach p 88
8 “There will be great earthquakes.” (Luke 21:11) According to the U.S. Geological Survey, since 1990 alone an average of 17 earthquakes per year have been powerful enough to damage buildings and crack the ground. And on an average, earthquakes strong enough to cause total destruction of buildings have occurred yearly. Another source states: “Earthquakes have claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in the last 100 years and improvements in technology have only slightly reduced the death toll.”

What source said that? That statement is completely wrong!
