*** g99 12/8 p. 11 A Remarkable Change for the Better ***The abandonment of high ethical standards in this century has caused priorities to change.TheTimesAtlasofthe20thCentury explains: "In 1900 nations and individuals still measured their worth in non-monetary terms. . . . By the end of the century nations measured their success in almost entirely economic terms. . . . Similar changes occurred in the way people thought about wealth." Today widespread gambling fosters a love of money, while radio, television, movies, and videos encourage material desires. Even game shows and advertising contests send the message that money is, if not everything, at least almost everything.
*** g74 9/8 p. 9 The Impact of TV ***Many things that appear on television create in the viewer a desire for material things that may have little practical value. In this connection L. E. Sissman, writing in TheAtlantic of February 1974, refers to "gruesome game shows . . . which dangle material carrots" before the participants "and make us [the listeners] shake with vicarious longing for the prize."

I knew a girl when I was growing up that wasn't allowed to watch game shows. It encouraged materialism. That was 20 yrs ago.

So, here goes. My wife keeps telling me to apply to Jeopardy, it seems as though I usually get 75 % of the questions right. Now, I was a jw for well over 43 years. I don't credit the wts with much of of my knowledge, but I did learn some things from them, biblically based of course.

Now, I don't think that I would necessarily go on the show for monetary gain as much as I would to prove to myself my intelligence. Then again, I know that I have a higher IQ than the average person, not being proud or egotistical here. So, what would I have to gain by being a contestant? $$$ ! That's right, the MONEY!! But, hey! I am not a greedy person, money comes and money goes, doesn't it? I don't live for money, I WORK for money. It's a natural given, right?

So, then, what's the BIG DEAL with the wtbts about even watching such ENTERTAINING shows? Narrow minded sob's are what they are, as usual.

My 2 cents worth, thank you for your indulgence.

My wife is one of the hardcore JWs and even she paused and asked me about that statement.

    Game shows? Really?

It's almost like there is a little man (or woman) inside her brain that is banging on a door, screaming at her that information from the platform isn't making any sense at all. But the rest of the brain is so consumed in the brainswashing that the little person is ignored.

Is this why "S" (for Satan) is one of the most popular letters on Wheel of Fortune, whereas "J" for "Jehovah" and "W" for "Watchtower" is not? Skeeter (whose name begins with S)

    NOTICE.

I am in the process of purchasing this magazine from the archives.

Please note that the WT now, when 'quoting' worldly sources, says things like. "A popular magazine says" instead of referencing a particular article.

I believe that has to do with the fact that the GROSSLY distort articles to begin with, and NEVER got copyright permission either!!!

Louis Edward Sissman was a child prodigy who wrote poetry sporadically through his life, only writing seriously in his later years. As a child, he had an enormous vocabulary and love of facts. When he was 13, he won the National Spelling Bee. Two years later, in 1943, he became a Quiz Kid on national radio, and a year later he became the youngest person ever to be accepted to Harvard University. Not emotionally ready for college, he was expelled in 1946. He stayed on in Boston, working at the Boston Public Library and writing poetry. Readmitted to Harvard a year later, he graduated cum laude in 1949, the recipient of the Garrison Prize in poetry and elected class poet.

Over the next decade Sissman worked at a variety of odd jobs in New York, when he finally found his calling, working for an advertising company. At the same time, he began to write poetry again and in 1964 he compiled a collection entitled Homage to Cambridge.

In 1965 Sissman was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. With this news, his outlook on life – and the flavor of the poetry he wrote – were changed. He wrote more about family, home and death. He published his first book, Dying: An Introduction in 1968. He continued working, both as the Creative Vice President for an advertising firm in Boston and writing book reviews for The New Yorker and monthly columns for The Atlantic Weekly until 1974. Many of these columns were later published in a collection entitled Innocent Bystander: The Scene from the '70's. Sissman's final collection, Hello Darkness, was published in 1978, two years after his death. It made him the posthumous recipient of the National Book Critics' Circle Award.

FOR NOW, YOU WILL NOTICE THAT L.E. SISSMAN WAS IN FACT A POET, NOT A CRITIC OR SCHOLAR. ADD TO THAT FACT, SISSMAN HIMSELF PARTICIPATED IN GAME SHOWS.....(SEE BOLDED/RED TEXT ABOVE)
