Big Oil, Big Money: One more reason the election is over

  If the election wasn't already over, it is now. The middle class Americans (and I'm one of them) have lost billions in home and stock equity in recent months, This, from CNN's website this morning, should put the final nail in the GOP coffin:

  Exxon Mobil breaks profit record, earns $14.8 billion

  Exxon Mobil Corp. set a quarterly profit record for a U.S. company today, surging past analyst estimates, CNNMoney.com reports. Exxon Mobil, the leading U.S. oil company, said its third-quarter net profit was $14.83 billion, or $2.86 per share, up from $9.41 billion, or $1.70, a year earlier.

  And why didn't the Democrat congress do anything to stop this? Answer--they want us to pay high gas prcies so we will be forced to change our American lifestyle. Drill baby drill !!!

  Yup, that story goes right to the core of how ignorant we have gotten as a people regarding business. The public schools do not teach basic economics, and the media loves it that way! I read the story and there is NO mention of Exxon's profit margin! Exxon's profit margin is 10.17%, so for every dollar in sales, they make a dime. Compare that to McDonald's for example, they have a margin of 19.41%. Or Coke, 18.74%. How about Microsoft? You want to talk about greed? 28.78%!!!!

  But there are good things happening because the recent high gas prices: people are demanding and buying cars with higher gas mileage (and hybrids are in great demand) and more people are riding mass transit. I'm hoping that even though gas prices are going down that the car companies with continue producing higher mileage cars.

  Let me see if I get this right....the reason that ExxonMobil's profit was so obscenely high was that they weren't extracting and selling enough oil?

  So you are in favor of the government stepping in stopping companies from running up large profits? Or, to put it another way, you are in favor of government "spreading some of that wealth around"?

  I'm 100% with you MrsJones. But we still need to have a bigger demand for for higher mpg cars here in the US. Ford has a car, Fiesta ECOnetic, it gets 65 mpg!!   The bad thing at this point isn't going to offset that good. The economy started to free fall when gas prices rose - it was for a whole heck of a lot of people, the beginning of the end and sadly, it was pure speculation and greed that threw the majority into the flames for the riches of the few.

  There are a glut of cars out there being repossessed and although it's slow, car dealers are shutting up shop. It's estimated that 700 will close down this year with most of those in California. That means a lot of empty real estate and no property taxes for the community, a reduction in real estate value for the community and people buying more used cars than new. sammieswife.

  Oil prices bah bah baaaadddd. Vote for O bah bah bah bama. All you sheep fall in line, he's new, he's different, he's a politician. Show me one that's worth a dime and I'll show you his tombstone. The face you see is just the puppet, the real bosses are in the shadows. The older I get, the more I realize, It's all a dog and pony show ( lots of fluff and tons of crap ). If your hope of a brighter future is in any man, other than yourself, your in trouble. This nation was built on the principle that a strong man makes a strong family, a stong family makes a better community, a better community makes a better state and on up the line. The people who look to the politicians to do it for us are lost and lazy. Left or right, pressure from individuals makes government move. Sitting and watching after you cast your vote is like making a bet. A person might as well cross their fingers. I'm not saying Obama is bad and McCain is good or vice-versa. All I'm saying is don't defend them when the're wrong. Stay active after you elect them. Watch what they do, read the laws they pass, call your congressman, call your senator. Jimmy Quillen ( congressman in Tn a few years ago ) told me he veiwed one letter from a citizen as the opinion of 2,500 or more people. When someone wrote him a letter he read it and took it to heart. David Davis ( current congressman TN ) opposed Bush when people of his district demanded it. Too many people look at politics as a spectator sport, time will lead those type into bondage everytime. I sicerely hope I didn't offend anyone, but if I did maybe you needed it.

  i dont trust obama or mccain. I voted for one of them already. the third party candidates are throw away votes to make it look like we have a choice. I voted in this election for the first time in my life because I now have the freedom to choose. I was sadly disappointed that in my state there were very few state/local elections that had anyone running against the incumbent...meaning no choice at all.

  Generally I dont trust politicians at all. They say one thing to get in, do something else once there or they dont get to stay and play for long.

  democrats have a majority in congress, but not a veto proof majority. sometimes I think logjams in congress is not always bad...sometimes no lawmaking is good..

  until the lobbyists are stripped of their ability to do business, nothing n o t h i n g will change in this country.

  as soon as McCain/Palin or Obama/Biden get in the Oval Office, the people that pull their strings will go into high gear. The people on the ticket are nothing more than puppets. Look at Bush...you dont think he is smart enough to do anything on his own, do you? Cheney on the other hand...He has been pushing buttons behind the scenes for decades:

  CHENEY: VP - 2001-2008 under Bush .... Sec of Defense under Papa Bush for 4 years.....congressman for 10 years before that...hell, he was chief of staff under Ford....he goes all the way back to the Nixon administration..... you dont think Cheney learned a few things along the way? Bush hasnt been running things...Cheney has...Bush is an idiot.

  So polls say Obama is winning.... Nov 4 will tell the tale...presuming no more hanging chads or ACORN monkey business or GOP crying to the SC or reindeer games in the Electoral College. And if the Dems get that 60 member majority in the Senate....give the Dems 2 years to start fixing things fast....or you will see a GOP landslide in 2010 and 2012 Congressional races and 2012 Presidential races...

  I will just be glad when the damn political commercials stop. Thank goodness for my new DVR.

  Oh lord. I'm about to get rude. I don't want to be restricted. I'll try to be good. Some folks need to read up on reality. There is no need to drill, Exxon Mobile made humongous profits, by NOT drilling or exploring on the land/rights they already have, but by buying up their own shares at higher rates. Because we the people were paying exorbitant prices!! Some of you really need to take advantage of all the knowledge we have available to us.
