just a boring observation on rusting skills...

Some basic mental skills seem to get rusty from lack of use. Like doing math in your head, composing thoughts on paper, knowledge of geography and others. It is obvious that our calculators, computers and instant voice communication especially have made the mastery of these things somewhat unneccessary. Too bad. I sometimes believe it undermines our ability to think. What is the point of a child being taught to tell time by an analog clock?

Physical skills, once learned, seem to be remembered by the body, like riding a bicycle. I had occasion to drive a stick shift auto recently and even though I have not driven one in years it came to me without a second thought.

    Much agreed, Gregor.

I had to study and practice a lot of math last weekend for a test. I did not realize how many basic rudamentary math skills I had lost over the years. It was an eye-opener.

Personally, I do tend to lament the general direction our society is headed in whereby gadgets are doing much of our thinking for us. One day, I realized that after seven months of being together, I had never memorized my girlfriend's cell phone number; as I was so accustomed to speed dialing it on my cell.

I remember old Fundies used to say to me 'the scripture sez that 'in the last days man would get wiser and weaker'. I never could find that scripture.

One old gentleman that was a close acquaintance would say that to me often: he was a Deacon of his Church and knew that I was deeply involved in JW's. We remained good friends regardless
