ok, Namewithheld, I understand. Like I said I am new at this posting business, although I have been reading the site for several months. I didn't post before bacasue I am interested as an observer, but didn't feel that I had anything important to contribute because I had never lived the JW life, although I had a strict religious upbringing, but not JW,thank goodness.

    Thanks for the explanation.

    This concern about....

... identifying, isolating and exposing "trolls" mystifies me. If the are JWs and have the temerity to post here and endure whatever consequences ensue from his/her participation, then I say .. welcome!

It is the same on any message board or usenet group. Trolls are rapidly identified because to not do so has been found to be harmful to discussion. 1) discussions get unproductive because people argue about stupid things the troll brought up just for that purpose. 2) good contributors can get discouraged for investing time on troll threads that later turn out to be wasted; so they stop participating ..

In both cases the troll wins. That is why people are so quick (and in some case too quick) to spot a troll or fake poster..

To be honest, I think the problem of 'trolls' is often overdone.

My reasoning is that if the topic is being debated and raises interesting points that are answered then it doesn't really matter whether the person actually believes the position that they ae taking or not as its the debate that matters.

It's just like debating - people get given something to debate whether they really believe it or not and it is how well they argue their point rather than the position that the hold in their mind that is of interest to the audience as that is all they can ever really see.

    Does that make sense?

If a troll raises a question that we can't differentiate from a 'genuine' poster then how does that alter the question?

I am not refering to someone who just wants to start flames / arguments.

I am not refering to someone who just wants to start flames / arguments.

I think most people do mean the above when they call someone a troll.

Trolls also usually try to start arguments on topics that have already been argued to death. So even if a topic is worth of discussion it may not be worthy of such if it was already discussed many times before.

I only started my topic because I was looking for advice. I am a "newbie" and I have never read about any situation like mine so far. I just started to read this website when I registered. Sorry if this is being repetitive, I didn't know. I have never posted on any website before, I don't know all the rules. I am just a kid.

Little_red_birdie: sorry if you got the impression I was picking on you, I was talking more about 'troll' posting in general in response to Simon and Room215; I wasn't writing about your original message which didn't strike me as a troll in the first place.

concerned_mama: my comment 'vouched for by a 10 post newbie' was just to point out that it doesn't do much good for one newbie to vouch for another one; if people are suspicious of some new poster then another newbie post won't help much. This is just par for the course on the internet, where many of us have seen it all in chatrooms and discussion groups.

regarding non witnesses dating a JW: for fun, no problem; getting serious it's bad news..

ok by the definition of a troll, neither concerned mum nor red have tried to either inflame or disrupt anyones threads as far as I'm aware, they havent even picked a 'major' subject to use as leverage to do so,all either of them has done is to ask for a bit of friggin advice which anyone whose had little to no experience of jws previously should be able to do, here of all places! Even if other people have asked before does it really matter? give em a break please? If my littlun came home and said she was dating some guy from schools of a religion I wasnt familiar with then I'd be on the net looking for background info too,
