    I lost my job at the start of the depression 8 years ago. After 25 years with the same company. Making tools.

    They started making everything in China, Russia and Mexico so they could sell it cheaply at Wallmart.

    Bush's daddies idea.

    Since then I have lost 3 more.

    They called me into the unemplyment office 8 years ago for a meeting. There was a room of about 50 people like me. People over 50 and unemployed.

    The state of Florida said to prepare ourselves, we would never make the money we had been making again in this lifetime.

    Hey Daniel-p, my brother has been looking for a week, and all he has is a recent degree in CS, and he already has two interviews with one that is looking to pan out.     oh!- sorry to be flippant... There is really nothing good to say about losing a job... I am really sorry for you. :(

    I am nervous too- my husband is applying for jobs now and I will be in a year when I graduate. Our type of work you can't just go anywhere and do.

    Things are a bit uncertain where I work. The main company laid off a few employees - as the work slowed down a couple months ago. Here locally, they put my wife on limited hours - until just this past week.

    But - I think things are slowwwwwly beginning to pick up. For now. They have me reviewing other peoples' layouts - and I give my comments and suggestions. Well... this one company... they liked my comments - and it was the last straw for the fella whut done the layout. They are laying him off - and our company will be getting the work. *gulp* I didn't mean to get someone fired.

    So... yeah... things are kinda crazy right now, but I still have my job. So far.

    I work for the governement too and we have had about 25 layoffs since September. One employee committed suicide one week before his scheduled layoff. We all know he was having problems at home, but think the layoff was the last straw. More layoffs will be announced in February. Things are a bit stressful (to put it mildly).

    I lost my job(that I loved) a few months after I started. There was a general layoff at the newspaper in August.

    Today, my sister called with news that she has been laid off too from her new job that she started a month or so after I was laid off.She has had 2 months there.

    We can't lose our optimism or we will just have to join the borg, sell our homes and spend the remaining time in field service:) Don't want that or any other kind of depressing despair to take over. If you are anywhere near seattle, I will buy you a beer:) My husband still has his job!

    BTS: Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, I'm not in IT.

    Brother: Thanks for the links also--I've checked out most of those in the past, I'll see about the others. Unfortunately, my profession doesn't advertise jobs through most of the general job databases.

    Kudra: Will you be staying in academia?
