So, what book contained the first official history of Jehovah's Witnesses? No, it was not Jehovah's Witnesses in the Divine Purpose (1959). It was Qualified to be Ministers published in 1955. Here is a file that contains the section "Modern History of Jehovah's Witnesses" taken from that book. The chapters are apparently a condensation of a series of articles that appeared in the Watchtower that year.

The file (only about 2.5 MB) can be downloaded from this filesharing site:

I'll leave comments on the material in this first official history to others.

Modern History of Jehovah's Witnesses, Study 76, Early Voices (1870-1878), page 297:

"Early Christianity with its brilliance of right doctrine and cleanness of theocratic organization began to be be eclipsed after the year 100 by a creeping spiritual darkness of "Babylonish" religious teachings, Grecian pagan philosophies and rank apostasy."

Well, the WTBTS itself certainly qualifies as rank apostasy. Uninspired prophecies, teaching that Jesus is "a God", channeling the dead... It can't get any more rank than that (not for lack of trying, though it can, and it has).

    Thanks, cabasilas.

You're welcome! It's an interesting account, but leaves a bit out. But, it's easier to read than Jehovah's Witnesses in the Divine Purpose. John, Lois, Tom and Eunice are hard to deal with!

A very interesting bit of information. I do remember this in 24 parts, 1 in each Watchtower for the whole of 1955, and it is on the CD ROM

In the UK I do NOT remember, nor have we a copy of ' Qualified to be Ministers' published in 1955

    We had the following:

Defending and Legally Establishing the Good News - 1950 96 pages

PREACHING TOGETHER IN UNITY - January 1, 1955 64 pages

PREACHING AND TEACHING IN PEACE AND UNITY - January 1, 1960 62 pages

    all 3 are 118mm wide x 175 tall

Does anyone have a PDF file of the whole ' Qualified to be Ministers' published in 1955 please?

This was of course our early days with the WTBTS
