I was introduced last night to the wondrous beverage that is Chimay Red, beer brewed by Trappist monks.

    .

Now I have such a desire for more that I'm about to go out in the bitter cold to purchase a bottle of the Blue label to try.

    .

Anyone else tried this stuff? It's like liquid crack. And I'm not even that much of a beer guy. But this stuff is complex in taste, and strong (@ 9% alcohol by volume, trust me, one 25 oz bottle will make two people happy).

    .

Any other specialty brews I should try while I'm on a beer kick?

Sir, welcome to the rest of your life!

Trappist Ales are delightful. Chimay Red is probably my very favorite. I have to drive all the way to Delta, Louisiana to get it. The Sovreign State of Mississippi does not sell any beer over 6% alcohol. It's worth the drive!

It's hard to beat Belgian beer in general. Another great one is Duvel Golden Ale. Not at all similar to the Trappists, but very delicious.

ohhhhh, good beer isn't it? once you have had it hard to drink any other kind. It's about eleven bucks a bottle here I think it's rated number 2 in the world. Although I think the Blue (Grand Reserve) is better than the red. purps

Nearly anything by Chimay is great, as well as any of these fine beverages by Unibroue:

    Maudite

    Raftman

    Trois Pistoles

    Don de Dieu

    La Fin Du Monde

    1837

    Blanche De Chambly

    Chambly Noire

    Éphémère (Apple)

    La Terrible

    Quelque Chose

You can get a sampler case around here for around $54.00- it's well worth it, as it never disappoints.

    I'm back : hic :

Sir, welcome to the rest of your life!

I think the rest of my life just got more expensive, lol.

Well, if you're in Vicksburg, you can't complain ;). If you're in Jackson, now that is a b ee rr u n beer run! I tried the Blue tonight, and noticed a brand called Three Philosophers that also seems to be a Trappist ale to try next time. I've heard good things about it.

It's hard to beat Belgian beer in general. Another great one is Duvel Golden Ale. Not at all similar to the Trappists, but very delicious.

I'll have to find a place that sells that. I'm buying the Trappist ales at the local Sprouts grocery store, but there is a liquer store in the area that probably stocks some of these more unusual beers.

I tried the Blue tonight. It was great, but I wish I'd had some of the Red to taste alongside it because to be honest, I couldn't say one was better (or even different) than the other, tasting them on two different nights. I have heard that the Blue can be re-corked for a longer time, even aged w/o any harm.

Another great Belgian beer is called Rocquefort (spelling?) like the french cheese, I believe this is bewed by monks as well,it certainly has a kick as it is 11% !!! but it tastes WONDERFULL!

I always drink it when I am in Belgium, funny,I have to keep going back 'coz I can't remember much about each trip.

Love and Happy christmas to all,
