Ever since I bought my townhouse I've been doing all sorts of little projects here and there.
- I fixed some weather stripping on the door.
- Changed the locks after moving in.
- I seeded the back yard so it would start growing grass
- I fixed my counter-top that was a bit un-even.
etc... All sorts of little things here and there.
Today I did the biggest (little) job: I fixed an odd sound coming from a sink.
I noticed a second drain pipe under the sink that connected to the sink's main drain pipe. I removed the second pipe and confirmed that the "plunking" sound was coming from it.
I traced the pipe up to the AC/Heating unit in the attic. It was the drain pipe for removing water condensation that forms in the AC unit. It had just a little bit of water in it that was being pushed by air from the AC fan. It was going "Plunk... plunk... plunk..." Very Annoying when I'm trying to work in my office next to the bathroom.
After doing some testing I found that the pipe did not have a P-Trap, which is why it was letting the air move like that.
I drove down to the local hardware store and bought some 3/4 inch PVC pipe, joints and gluing chemicals (the purple stuff and the cement).
In no time I built a P-Trap, had it installed and the noise was gone.
This is one of the things I looked forward to in owning a home: Taking care of little projects to make the house just a little bit nicer.
