JW reading bible at bank

Last I knew, most businesses like that have "side work" to do. That can include making sure there are supplies (envelopes, etc.) in the front cubbies, pens that work, and that everything is counted. Plus, I have heard the expression many times "If you have time to lean, you have time to clean". Very rarely do employees actually end up in a pickle with nothing to do.

It's the same everywhere. I have seen cashiers that are busy at supermarkets. Even with no one in line, they have to be prepared at any time--if there are people shopping, they have to wait for the customer to come to the line. Plus, there is side work--newspapers to sort, belts to clean, the scanner to clean, making sure there are supplies on hand, and stocking the register displays. It would seem to me that, in order to have time to read the Bible, it would have to be very slow for a protracted amount of time, all sidework done, and they are expecting to get busy later.

I'm surprised they could read anything nonwork related on the job. We can only read the bible on break or lunch and cannot leave it out on our desk....hmmm?

I was in the bank the other day...it's a small branch, two tellers... and I was the only customer. The teller I approached had a medical textbook open laying to the side. Apparently she's taking medical classes and was using any down time to study.

I don't see anything wrong with the practice as long as all their work is caught up.

How many of us are at work right now, reading and posting on JWN? What's the difference?

When your head rolls, don't ask why.

When your head rolls, don't ask why.

Well, my head won't roll for spending time on here from time to time. I'm paid to get a job done, not by the hour. As long as I'm on schedule or ahead of schedule, I can come and go pretty much as I please. That's the upside. The downside is that If I'm needed after hours or weekends, I've got to be available at no extra pay.

Not every job is a "must stay busy at all times" job. Not everyone has side jobs to do when not busy with their main tasks. That's the beauty of getting a decent education and landing a career that involves more than being able to say, "Do you want fries with that?".

It's possible that the bank teller isn't allowed to leave their post while open for customers to come in and do their banking. And if there are no customers and all their housekeeping at the station is done, they're allowed to read or study something not work related. That's between the employee and the employer. And if the employer doesn't have a problem with it why should we question it? Maybe the real issue is that its because someone doesn't like their choice of reading material?

My employer questions it and it is a work rule. It is good to make sure what your employer officially requires.

Good post, Undercover. I totally agree. A degree and career can mean the difference between doing your main job and janitorial duties and just doing your main job.

Bank tellers only earn about $8/hr. Still, it is white collar and usually doesn't demand janitorial duties on the side. I mean, why clean a clean counter that's only had money touch it? That's blue collar common laborer thinking. Busy busy busy! Be sure to ask if they want fries with that or you are fired! Wipe that counter! Mop that floor! Serve those customers!

It's a friggin' BANK! They don't get dirty like that. If it's okay with the boss to read whatever, then why worry?

I have to agree with cameo-d. I expect my employees to perform work during work hours. If the only thing left to do is read, then they should read something that improves their job-related knowledge or skills.

Talk about picking on the JWs for any conceivable thing. The teller next door could have been reading the National Enquirer. Yawn.

Anyway, my guess would be that the average JW seldom reads just the Bible.
