Now they want me to wear a crown (page 2)

Ok, I had gone to the dentist for the first time in 10 years back in nov., I've had ins, but I dunno I was just lazy I guess. Anyway, one rather large filling had gotten a little loose and there was decay under it so it ended up that I needed a crown. They took a mold of the tooth, drilled out the old filling, and left a pathetic little stub of a tooth there. Then they took a mold of the remains, and made a temporary crown while they had the permanent one made. Took two weeks for the perm one to get there, according to them it's usually shorter but there was the thanksgiving holiday inbetween.

Mine was a little sensitive for a couple weeks, like if I bit down on something really crunchy, and it felt a bit off for a while, but after about two weeks I stopped noticing the crown as being different. I guess I was pretty lucky with 10 years and no dentist visits to only end up with that, and one small cavity that didn't require any numbing to fix.

If you have been going to this dentist for years and have confidence in the person then definately a crown can be a good thing. I have had a crown for 13 years and no problems so far with that one. However.....

However, if this is a new dentist I would ask a lot of questions...like...

how long do you have to place the crown before the glue dries? (30 seconds or 2 minutes?)

what happens if the glue dries and the crown is crooked?

can an improperly fitted crown cause an abscess? (yes it can!) Can an abscess be life threatening? (yes it can!)

(Some dentists like to generate more business. If this dr doesn't have a full office and waiting list...find someone else!)

What are the chances you will need to return for a root canal AFTER the crown is placed?

If the crown is improperly placed and you have a "high spot" (as they like to call it {to alleviate blame}) will the dentist grind down the adjacent good tooth to make the improperly fitted crown "bite right"? ("Oh, that's a common practice," they will tell you as they chisel away your good tooth!)

going to the dentist is expensive.

Dental insurance is almost a joke.

I have it. But it usually cost 500 to 1000$ for any incidents or work.

I used to go twice a year, now I go every 3 or 4 years,

usually when I have a problem.

I dont make money like I used to.

I do floss after every meal and rinse with floride once a day.

When you are young they give you fillings once you hit 40 they give you caps and crowns.

I had a friend who 10 years ago was 40.

He never went to the dentist. He didnt take very good care of himself.

He showed me his teeth and he didnt have any fillings. And he had all of his teeth. But he said his gums hurt.

It looked to me like he had gingavitus.

It's almost like going to the dentist and getting fillings causes problems.

I have probably 5 crowns and 1 bridge.

I go to a dental clinic and have since 81 here in Florida. Florida dental Center.

I have never had a problem with them.

They spend a lot of time getting the crown to fit correct.

I used to be a tool maker and they kind of do it like making a tool.

They use blue paper and have you chomp down on it and then they take the hand drill, and grind off the high spots on the

crown untill you no longer leave a blue mark from chomping down.

I never had a problem going to the dental clinic where they have an assembly line atmosphere.

But I have had one root canal in my life at private dentist and endodontist a type of dentist who is a specialist

and usually only treats the most difficult cases. The dental clinic doesnt do root canals.

He did a root canal on the wrong tooth.

So much for specialist and private dentist.

I remember when I was young back in the 50's and 60's when I would go to the doctor or dentist, they were by themselves,

They didnt have any nurse or assistants. They answered the phone, made out the bill, gave change and did house calls for 20$.
