Time heals most wounds, unfortunately the wounds can be reopened. I need a better band-aid.

You take the tape away slowly cuz it usually hurts less than ripping it off all in one go.
Also if the wound was a gaping, weepy one, it's possible that the tape might be stuck to it and you might rip off all the repair work that's already taken place (OUCH!) - so it's safer to remove the tape slowly.
Either way, you have to let the fresh air get to the wound some time or it will never completely heal and in such a state there is more chance of infection.
