If I live so long, should be ok. I like the male to female ratios!

If you would rather die than go to one, then you must not value your life very much.

Personally I value my life very much, and that includes my personal life, privacy, and space. I can enjoy the company of other people only in very limited doses. I prefer to die on my own terms if at all possible.

There is nothing wrong with nursing homes. The one where we put my father is very nice. The nurses get along and talk with the residents, and they have pool, aquariums, a huge bird cage, a piano, and tvs all over the place. If you would rather die than go to one, then you must not value your life very much.

That depends very much on the nursing home. My wife's grandfather was in a V A nursing home. The rooms and hallways were very small and held two people. The hallways reeked of piss. All over were the sounds of people in pain. And they were short on nursing staff. The common room was very unappealing. The fixtures looked like they hadn't been updated since the 70's. Wood paneling all over. The games and books were all ancient too.

When his wife died a year later, she wound up in a nursing home very much like you describe.

As far as me, I don't really know. There are times when I love solitude and would love to have the time to learn something new, read a book, play a video game, or watch a movie. I think it's the lack of privacy that would get to me. Not having my own private space. I'd hate to share a room with a stranger.

I look forward to playing with my food and being able to get away with it because they will just call me senile instead of eccentric.

This is what I will do with my carrots:

True. My mom was in one for a short time, but it cost $500 a week back in 2003. It was nice enough though. Shortly after she moved into my sister's home they had a fire in that nursing home and several elderly people died. Since it was a smaller nursing home and all on a single level the law didn't require them to have a sprinkler system in place.

Hey, if I live that long and get stuck in that situation, I'll make the best of it. Old gals need loving too, and there will be so many of them!! And with the Alzheimer's patients, you can use the same pick up lines over and over. Same jokes too!

On the more serious side...My approach to life is strongly shaped by Taoist philosophy. I find it eminently practical. Basic to it is accepting your circumstances, not getting attached to things, and finding ways to enjoy what is at that moment without regretting or longing for what isn't. I've come to see that nostalgia, regret and sentimentality are very, very limiting.

I'm no longer young. I accept that. I love being the age that I am at whatever moment I'm alive. Most people have beliefs, very few have an actual philosophy of life by which they live and act. Understanding and applying the wisdom of taoist sages actually draws people to you. It is hard for me to imagine that anyone who lived in that manner would ever be lonely. I don't know why they spoiled taoistic thought by turning it into a religion. It's perfect for us atheists and free thinkers, as there is no god there at all. Even the Buddah told his followers to question every teacher, teaching and anything called a sacred text! If you meet the Buddah on the road, kill him!

I've seen the good and the bad. Fortunately, if Mom needs to go she can afford club med. As for me, I'd rather go early

My Grandma is in one, but the new term is "assisted living", lol. She's in her 90's and seems to like the place. They have steak and baked potatoes, dessert, game nights, and can spend quiet time in their apartments if they want. Lately, she's been friendly with a gentleman resident and he calls at her door to walk her to dinner. Doesn't sound all that bad to me.
