Thats why the smart one's are all drunk all the fucking time... Can't face facts? Drink up!
No one has mentioned that they can never drop 1914 as a prophetic date. The "Babylonish captivity" doctrine applies to 1918-1918 and is inextricably tied to 1914. "Coming out" of "Babylonish captivity" and being approved as God's sole channel of communication, i.e. being chosen as the Faithful and Discreet slave CLASS in 1919 is inextricably linked to 1918, which as I've stated is then linked to 1914.
Drop 1914 and the whole rubbish about being chosen as the "slave" falls in the toilet where it belongs. They can distance 1914 from Armagedden by redefining "this generation" as they did in 1995, but to drop 1914 completely would demolish all their claims to exclusive authority over their cult. If they did that, dubs would quickly realize their leaders were never chosen and are just a group of hypocritical windbags. There would be a mass exodus or the dubs would end up like Unitarians, believing whatever they want without recrimination.

Farkel,
Thank you. More of what I'm trying to say.

Smoke and Mirrors...
If they did that, dubs would quickly realize their leaders were never chosen and are just a group of hypocritical windbags.
Perhaps...
Then again, are dubs able to "quickly realize" anything?
I would say they are incapable of "quickly realizing" that the warm wet sensation running down their leg is dog pee, much less that their cherished "FDS" is just a bunch of out of touch old men.
JWs are trained not to realize, quikly or otherwise, much of anything.
I think it's like anything else. Don't talk about it for long enough and people will forget about it. Then it can be dropped. I think as "apostates" a lot of us know the links to their prophetic dates and the reprecussions a lot better than most JWs.
Dropping 1914 wouldn't be without the loss of many. But there are still "Bible Students" who still follow Russell's books. If people still believe that, there are others who will always believe what the WTBS teaches.
Granted, I think the JWs are in trouble. Many posts have showed how the internet has hurt them, the lack of qualified younger ones to fill the older ones shoes, the rate of people dropping out, etc. Doctrinal changes will also push some people out. I could see where one day there might only be one hall in each large city and that's all.
Oompa,
For clarification, are you saying they are going to QUIETLY stop talking about 1914, marginalizing its place within the doctrines? Or, are you asserting they will OFFICIALLY throw 1914 onto the scrap heap via a Watchtower Study article or a Question from Readers?
I'm of the opinion that we will see no OFFICIAL admission that 1914 is NOT a special date from the Watchtower Society.
I have a PayPal account. Are friendly wagers against the rules, here?

Leaving WT...how this? they stop mentioning it for 50 years...then the new light flashes forth...and you gotta see this future!…kinda long but a damm fun read:
**2060 WT. pg. 8 par. 4** "For a few decades now, we have suggested the thought that the “faithful and discreet slave” (Mathew 24:45-47) were appointed by Jesus in 1919, just a few years after the Gentile Times ended in 1914. However the mention of this appointment does not appear until vs. 45 and may not be related to earlier verses in chapter 24 where Jesus was obviously when Jesus was obviously referring to the very last days of Jerusalem and this present wicked system of things when in his apostles asked him “Tell us, When will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?” (Matthew 24:3)
5. What does this new light mean? With a certainty Jehovah’s love for the Christian Congregation was so great that when he sent the promised “helper” in the form of holy spirit on the day of the Pentecost, continuing to do so thereafter for those turning to God through his son. (John 14: 16, 17, 26; 15) Therefore it now seem obvious that it would have been imperative to appoint his “faithful and discreet” at that same time! In this manner, his “slave class” would immediately be able to dispense the much needed “food at the proper time” to all of the Christian Congregation! What a wonderful provision that this appointment began in order to care for his sheep from the very beginning of the pouring out of his spirit!
6. Another minor adjustment to our thinking has occurred due to recent archeological discoveries that indicate that the fall of ancient Jerusalem probably occurred in 586/587 BCE rather than 607 BCE. What does this mean? That the gentile times actually ended in 1894 rather than 1914, which puts us even deeper into this last days, and even closer to day when Jehovah will soon bring all wickedness to an end!
That the gentile times actually ended in 1894 rather than 1914,
Wrong direction - a "destruction of Jerusalem" date 20 years later would push it 20 years past 1914 to 1934.
If they were really clever, they'd pick 586 BCE, and switch the date to 1935, which is probably still fresh in most JW's minds. "OOh, how wise they are! Once agian, they picked the right date for 'something significant' to happen, even though the details were a smidgen off!"
