For those unaware, this Sunday marked the 2nd week I have attended a local Unitarian/Universalist service. I have given them a try because I no longer feel that isolating myself from people is good for me. Also, they are creed-less, dogma-less, and liberal.
The first weeks service, the female minister recently got back from Uganda, and shared what a real missionary work is. That included a several years long support of a village school, buying computers and helping the kids learn through real education.
This week, an 80 year old couple who have evidently travelled the world gave a slide show of their trip to the Galapagos Islands. They titled it "In the Footsteps of Darwin." They frequently talked about evolution, and it was refreshing to me....
Now the fun part....
There are two separate youth classes, separated roughly into middle school and high school designations... The middle school group (called a "coming of age" group... COA) got to pick 5 religions that they wanted to learn more about and visit.... And yeah, one of the 5 were JW's......
The minister knew about my involvement briefly, so she and the Religious Education director asked me if I could help hook them up.... At which point I asked "How much do you know about JW's?" They both said that the only thing they knew was that they knocked on doors all the time...
Ok... Well, I then got to go into detail of my experiences, and some of the contradictory teachings, including blood and shunning. Those were the two biggies for the adults... Anyway, I was asked if I would help next week answering the kids questions, and then the following week, I was invited to come up with a little presentation if I wanted to. I agreed!
So, I get to tell them all about JW's, including what they can expect when they get in their van and visit a KH.... Should be fun.....
I Get to Witness About the Witnesses......

Scarred for life
AllTimeJeff:
I think it's fabulous what you are doing. Not only will it educate the people at the Unitarian Church but it will be a big, big step in your healing. My hat is off to you. You are really moving forward with your life.

I've done this kind of thing a couple of times. A few years ago I spoke to the High School group at our church (about three hundred kids in the gym). I had a really good time, and I think they got a lot out of it. This exercise went particularly well:
I started in a list of usual JW no-no's and told them to stand if this applied to them:
If you're female not wearing a dress or skirt
If the hem of your skirt or dress is above your knee
If you're male and your hair is over your ears or collar.
If you're male and wearing jewelry other than a wedding ring (got some laughs at that one).
If you have a tatoo.
If you're female and have more than one piercing in each ear.
If have a piercing in any part of your body other than your ears.
If you're male and not wearing a tie.
By the time I was done (there might have been a couple more) virtually the entire room was on their feet. I then told them that if we were in a Kingdom Hall everybody standing up would be getting counseled by the elders (alone in the backroom) after the meeting. I think that did more than a lot of talk about doctrine to show up what a controling cult they are.
We also had a vigorous discussion of JW dating standards.

Homerovah the Almighty
Sounds like a worthwhile effort, nice to see a religious organization with an open mindset willing to look into things to establish their
own perceptions, very unlike the JWS.
This what a like about some religious sects they open their doors to people but don't necessarily lock them in once their inside
strife with regulated indoctrination.

What an interesting opportunity. Please let us know how it goes.

Invite some elders to come and speak- only don't tell them they won't be talking to the group. After listening to your JW Intro about JW's for 15 minutes they will get up and stomp out.

I am so happy to hear this Jeff. I have a good apostate friend that I grew up with (who doesn't post here) and he attends a Universalist/Unitarian Church for the same reasons you do. I really would like to go to one myself but the closest to me is an hour away. Take advantage of this chance to save possible future Dubs from years of B.S.!

My thanks to you and all the ex jw's who are able to educate the public about how life really is this cult!
