I am an officer in my union, work on several self-help support groups, and am on 2 committees. You just have to pursue your interests.
Have you tried volunteer work since leaving the dubs?

I have done volunteer work with a number of different groups over the years and found it very worthwhile. I recommend trying a few and seeing what fits. Previous posters have mentioned many good organizations and opportunities. I would add Hospice to that list.

volunteer work is really taking off now with the recession. Its a good way to keep up with skills and share in a community life imo if you have the time. I'm presently doing a course so that I can take up a volunteer position. There is a good feeling in the group.

It all sounds pretty positive to me. I like the thought too that when you leave the JW's you feel free to do this kind of thing without breaking their ridiculous rules or feeling guilty. No more wasting time selling religious magazines in the weekend, instead now their is the freedom to spend my time really helping people in need. I like that feeling a lot!

Hej Yadda yadda 2,
I have found that working with women and children in crisis homes extremely rewarding...I help and give what I can..somedays we go for trips to the library with the kids other days we make food for over 40 and have a great time. I come home feeling I have given without any strings attached. That is such a good feeling as I often felt bad as a witness that I was supposed to help only if they progressed and came to meetings etc. It is funny that now I can switch off the witness feelers...and just give love and support and not worry about the response.
I am helping one victim of violence and her 4 small children, I shudder to think of what would have been expected of her if she became interested in the witnesses or they found her....
Find a local charity and start there...pebbles in the pond...spread ripples...you never know where it may end.
