    Catholic Church Under Attack

State trying to take away governing powers from dioceses!

    March 11, 2009 12:08 AM EDT (Updated: March 11, 2009 12:36 AM EDT)

This past Thursday, State Senator Andrew McDonald of Stamford and Representative Michael Lawlor of East Haven, Chairmen of the Judiciary Committee, introduced a bill (S.B. 1098) that directly attacks the Catholic Church. They even started out with "in respect to the Catholic Church"... which specifically targets and excludes them from any other religion.

Here is what they are proposing: Connecticut is trying to pass a law that the bishop and pastors of a diocese, no longer have authority to manage the parish/diocese affairs and that the parishioners will create a board to make choices and decisions for the parish/dioceses... King of Connecticut?

Makes me think of Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.

Well, it's really not too far off for word association.

The Great Harlot heads the Round Table.

This is just part of the Democrat onslaught on freedom of religion. FOCA is going to force hundreds of Catholic hospitals to shut down. By the time the Democrats get done, the only thing we will be allowed to believe in is Obama. I mean, can't these morons even read the Constitution? The Establishment Clause cuts both ways.

I don't think they can mess with the Catholic church.

I worked for a Catholic hospital and it probably will shut down, but it has nothing to do with Obama. The nuns there run a pretty unorganized place. They refuse to work enough nurses and patient care is lousy and downright dangerous because of it. Yet they talk about their "mission of compassion and caring for the sick".

    burntheships,

What's happening these days reminds me of the battles between the Federalists and the anti-Federalists in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Where is a Thomas Jefferson when we need one? Will we soon have 12 Justices on the Supreme Court or a dozen new Federal Courts stacked with Marxist Judges? Hope not.

The original idea for SB 1098 came from Greenwich Republican Thomas L. Gallagher, who is a former parish trustee and devout Catholic. The 46-year-old attorney wrote an op-ed article on the issue in The Stamford Advocate in 2007. He is joined by Paul Lakeland, the chairman of the religious studies department at Fairfield University, which is operated by Jesuit priests.

If approved, the bill would give the general and financial powers of parishes to a board of directors. The board would be elected by members of the congregation, and clergy would serve as a nonvoting ex-officio member.

What prompted it? Rev. Michael Jude Fay of St. John's Church in Darien stole about $1.4 million from the diocese.

Why not? FDR nearly pulled it off.

The original idea for SB 1098 came from Greenwich Republican Thomas L. Gallagher

The bill was introduced by Rep. Michael Lawlor and Sen. Andrew J. Mcdonald of the Judiciary Committee of the Connecticut State Legislature. Click on the links and see their party affiliations.

    What prompted it?

They want to take power away from the bishops and give it to local boards so they can advance their agenda with respect to gay marriage and other issues.

Correction: Fay was one of the other Catholic priest thieves in CT, a third was Rev. Moynihan. Here's the one that inspired Gallagher:

"A 17-year resident of Connecticut, Gallagher became a trustee at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenwich in January 1997 -- one month after the resignation of then Monsignor Charles Stubbs.

Stubbs announced his retirement in December 1996, citing health reasons. He was a few years later defrocked after admitting to molesting a boy in the 1980s.

Stubbs' departure from St. Mary's was dogged by questions of improper spending of least a half a million dollars. But the diocese never provided details."

"In January 2007, Gallagher wrote a column in The Advocate calling on state lawmakers and the Catholic faith to make changes to the Religious Corporation Act "that produce a governing structure that allows for the best of the priesthood and the laity to blossom in an environment of mutual respect and understanding."
